September is Su***de Prevention Awareness Month. 💜
It’s a difficult conversation—but an important one, especially within the autism community.
Research shows that autistic individuals face a significantly higher risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. And while there isn’t one simple reason why, we know that experiences like bullying, isolation, unmet support needs, masking, and feeling misunderstood can all play a role.
At Kaibab Behavioral Services, we believe behavior is communication.
Sometimes the most important thing we can do is stop asking, “How do we change this behavior?” and start asking, “What is this person trying to tell us?”
💜 Connection before correction.
💜 Communication over compliance.
💜 Teaching children that “no” is okay.
💜 Helping them ask for a break or for help.
💜 Creating spaces where they don’t have to hide who they are.
ABA therapy is not a treatment for suicidality, but compassionate autism support can help children build communication, self-advocacy, independence, and the ability to express when something isn’t right.
Our newest blog explores the connection between autism and suicide—and what parents, caregivers, educators, and providers should know.

💜 September is Su***de Prevention & Awareness Month.

At Kaibab Behavioral Services, this month carries special meaning.

The individuals we serve—including autistic, neurodivergent, and other people with disabilities—can experience unique challenges that may increase vulnerability to mental health concerns and suicidal thoughts. Social isolation, bullying, feeling misunderstood, communication barriers, masking, and repeatedly being asked to fit into environments that were not designed with their needs in mind can all take a toll.

This is one of the reasons our work must be about so much more than changing behavior.

At Kaibab, we believe behavior is communication. We believe in listening when someone tells us—through their words, actions, or behavior—that something is not okay. We believe in assent, self-advocacy, connection, dignity, and creating environments where people know they matter exactly as they are.

Su***de prevention is not just about responding in a moment of crisis. It is also about building connection before that moment ever arrives.

It looks like:
💜 Creating spaces where it is safe to say, “I’m struggling.”
💜 Teaching meaningful communication and self-advocacy.
💜 Taking behavior seriously as communication.
💜 Supporting caregivers without judgment.
💜 Building genuine relationships and belonging.
💜 Making mental and behavioral healthcare accessible to every community.

This September, we encourage everyone to pay attention, listen differently, check on the people around you, and remember that sometimes the person who needs connection most may not know how to ask for it.

At Kaibab, our mission is to expand the reach of compassionate care—and that includes making sure the people we serve know their lives, voices, and experiences matter.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health or suicide-related crisis, call or text 988 to connect with the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline.

🐾 What if one of your child’s favorite sources of regulation already has four paws?

For many children with autism or developmental needs, pets can offer more than companionship. A familiar furry friend may provide opportunities for sensory regulation, emotional connection, communication, movement, and even practicing everyday life skills. 💛

And there’s something else our pets remind us of every day: behavior is communication.

Just as we learn to notice when a dog moves closer, walks away, wants to play, or needs space, we can approach our children’s behavior with that same curiosity and respect.

In our newest blog, we’re exploring how pets can support sensory and emotional regulation—and how families can use these naturally occurring moments to encourage connection, independence, and meaningful growth.

🐾 Happy National Dog Day from Kaibab Behavioral Services! 🐾

Meet some of the furry friends behind our team! 🐶💛 These sweet faces belong to the staff of Kaibab Behavioral Services, and today they’re getting their moment in the spotlight.

Dogs actually give us a pretty great reminder of something we believe deeply at Kaibab: behavior is communication.

A wagging tail. Moving closer. Walking away. A tucked tail. Bringing you their favorite toy. Each behavior tells us something when we take the time to notice.

The same is true for the individuals we support. Communication doesn’t always look like words—and when we slow down, pay attention, and respect what someone is telling us, we can respond with compassion instead of simply seeking compliance.

🐾 Here’s to the pups who remind us every day about connection, trust, and unconditional love.

Show us the furry friend in your family in the comments or in a DM and be shared on our story! 🐕🐾

Professional training should do more than check a box. It should change what happens when professionals walk back into their classrooms, clinics, organizations, and communities.

At Kaibab Behavioral Services, we provide practical, evidence-based training designed to help professionals feel more confident supporting individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities.

Our customized trainings are available for:

🎓 Educators & school teams
🩺 Healthcare professionals
🚓 Law enforcement & first responders
🏕️ Camps & recreation programs
🤝 Community organizations

We focus on the things that matter in real life—communication, sensory needs, behavior support, de-escalation, connection, and creating environments where people feel understood and supported.

Because behavior is communication, and meaningful inclusion requires more than awareness. It requires practical tools.

We’re now booking professional trainings for organizations throughout Northern Arizona and beyond.

🏫 Can ABA therapy happen at school? Yes—and for some children, the school environment can be an important place to practice skills where they’re actually needed.

From navigating transitions and classroom routines to communicating needs, interacting with peers, and building independence, school-based ABA can help children use the skills they’re learning in real-life situations.

But getting ABA started at school can feel confusing. Who do you talk to first? How does insurance fit in? What about your child’s IEP or existing school services?

Our newest blog breaks down:

✨ What ABA in school can look like
✨ How it differs from school-provided services
✨ Steps families may need to take to get started
✨ Why collaboration between families, schools, and ABA teams matters
✨ How ABA can help skills carry over into everyday life

At Kaibab Behavioral Services, we believe behavior is communication—and meaningful progress happens when children have the support they need in the environments where they live, learn, and grow. 💛

The countdown to back-to-school has begun! 🍎✏️
For many families, the start of a new school year brings excitement—but it can also bring anxiety, challenging behaviors, and big emotions. If your child struggles with changes in routine, you’re not alone.

Remember: behavior is communication. ❤️

Instead of focusing on getting through the first day perfectly, focus on helping your child feel prepared, supported, and connected.

A few simple ways to make the transition smoother:
✅ Gradually adjust bedtime and wake-up times.
✅ Practice the morning routine before school starts.
✅ Use visual schedules to build predictability.
✅ Practice getting dressed, packing a backpack, and leaving the house.
✅ Celebrate small wins along the way.

At Kaibab Behavioral Services, we believe in connection, not compliance. Our BCBA-led in-home ABA services help children build communication, independence, emotional regulation, and everyday life skills in the place they matter most—home.

Whether progress looks like asking for a break, getting out the door with fewer reminders, or feeling more confident in a new routine, every step forward is worth celebrating.

Questions Families Keep Asking 💙

One of the most common questions we hear is: “What does the ABA intake process look like?”

If you’re just beginning your autism journey or exploring ABA therapy for the first time, it can feel overwhelming. The good news? You don’t have to figure it out alone.

At Kaibab Behavioral Services, we believe the intake process should be clear, supportive, and centered around your family—not just paperwork.

✨ Here’s what you can expect:
✔️ A conversation to learn about your child and your family’s goals
✔️ Insurance verification and assistance with required paperwork
✔️ A comprehensive assessment with one of our BCBAs
✔️ An individualized treatment plan tailored to your child’s unique strengths and needs
✔️ Ongoing communication so you always know what’s next

Our BCBA-led team is committed to making the process as smooth and welcoming as possible. From your first phone call through the start of services, we’re here to answer your questions and walk alongside you every step of the way.

Because meaningful progress begins with trust. ❤️

If you’re looking for compassionate, individualized in-home ABA therapy in Flagstaff or Northern Arizona, we’d love to connect.
