Drive Trail Ridge in the afternoon, where two miles of climbing opens the whole range. Then find a quiet pullout at dusk and wait for the elk to come down to the water.

When you're ready to slow down, your basecamp is right on the lake.

Timed entry permits are required for Rocky Mountain National Park through October, so plan ahead.
