Behind a 400-foot snake wall in an Escondido park stands a mosaic warrior queen riding a five-legged eagle. ✨

Queen Califia's Magical Circle is the work of Niki de Saint Phalle, the Franco-American artist who spent her last years in San Diego County. She began it in 2000 inside Kit Carson Park. The enclosed circle is 120 feet across: eight totems, 11 to 21 feet tall, standing around a central queen surfaced entirely in mirrored glass, everything built over steel armatures and skinned in hand-cut glass, ceramic and stone.

The subject is where the state's name comes from. Califia was the warrior queen of a mythical island of gold in a 16th-century Spanish romance — the island of California — and Spanish explorers carried the name north with them until it stuck to a real coastline.

Saint Phalle died in May 2002, before it was finished. The garden opened on October 26, 2003, and it remains the only sculpture garden she ever made in the United States.

You come in through a mosaic maze, which means you cannot see a single piece of it until you are standing inside.

Is there a better way to hide something enormous than putting a wall shaped like a snake around it?
