Zaab Zaab Brooklyn Presents One Night in Taiwan

Chef Eric Lyu & Pei Wei explore fermentation & family recipes at special February 1 dinner in Williamsburg

Special guest: DJ Cloud | feature Taiwanese, Mandarin music

Wei befriended Chef Lyu after tasting his huang jing pao cai (golden napa kimchi) a year ago. Lyu quit his job sa a hotel chef to care for his sick wife and has been selling the piquant fermented cabbage via a Facebook group whose English name is KimchiLyu. Wei was touched by the story of Lyu and his wife and wanted to help spread the word about his golden kimchi, which is often served with niu rou mian, or beef noodle soup in Taiwan.

“Eric’s golden kimchi is very different from the suan cai or pickled mustard greens you see everywhere with beef noodle soup,” Wei said. “Before I met him, I never saw this in New York City.”

Wei’s niu rou mian, inspired by a recipe from her father who almost opened a beef noodle soup shop in Taiwan, cooks for eight hours and features beef shank and tendon with Chinese herbs. The dinner is something of a passion project for Wei who spent months tasting beef noodle soup around the city and finally decided to make her own. “I’m not saying it’s the best in New York City, but it’s a memory from my family, so it’s the best for me,” she said.

This special $49 prix fixe consists of a welcome drink of Taiwan brown sugar-red date tea; Chef Eric’s Huang Pao Cai (Golden Napa Kimchi) paired with Bing Hua Jian Jiao (crispy pork potstickers); Lu Rou Fan (minced pork over rice); and Pei Wei’s Niu Rou Mian (beef noodle soup).

What: One Night in Taiwan: An exploration of fermentation & family recipes with Chef Eric Lyu & Pei Wei
Where: Zaab Zaab Brooklyn, 208 Grand St., Williamsburg, Brooklyn
When: Sunday, February 1, 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m.; 8 p.m.-9:30 p.m.
Reservations via OpenTable

Southwest X Southeast Asia, January 22, a special evening with Siti & Zaab Zaab

We’re so excited to host Siti, Austin’s hottest new Southeast Asian eatery from Chef Laila Bazahm, on January 22 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Zaab Zaab’s O.G. location, 76-04 Woodside Avenue, Elmhurst, in the heart of Little Thailand Way.

Siti was recently added to the Michelin Guide and was also named a best new restaurant by Austin Monthly. The idea for the dinner came about because Bazahm and our co-owner Pei Wei were both part of The James Beard Foundation’s Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership Program.

“When I learned my new sister Laila would be coming to New York City to cap off the year’s leadership program, I decided we had to do something special together to showcase her and Siti’s amazing food,” Wei said.

Bazahm will prepare Hiramasa Crudo with tom kha broth, Thai chili oil, Asian herb emulsion, smoked trout roe, and Asian pear; Oysters with Nahm Jim and Coconut Calamansi Emulsion; and Siti’s Laksa, coconut-galangal broth, PEI mussels, prawns, fresh egg noodles. Zaab Zaab’s chefs will prepare Rainbow Saku Sai Moo with minced pork, peanuts and sweet radish colored with pandan, beet and butterfly pea; Tod Mun Goong Pizza with spicy shrimp; and the Northern Thai noodle curry Khao Soi with chicken and house fermented mustard greens. The two restaurants will collaborate on a special Thai-Filpino ice cream sandwich for dessert featuring housemade sticky rice ice cream.

Check out our event on Thursday, Jan 22, 2026.

Mayor Mamdani Dined in at Zaab Zaab on Sunday night (Jan 4th)

(forward article from Eater)
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani loves dining out in his hometown. Food has been part of his public image, from growing up and working across the boroughs, his rapping days as Mr. Cardamom, his time as New York State Assemblymember, to his successful mayoral campaign.
In talking about making the city more affordable for New Yorkers, Mamdani has honed in on ways the restaurant industry has been challenged, such as the high cost of halal carts. All the while, he’s known for supporting, highlighting, and more importantly, enjoying the breadth of New York City’s culinary scenes, with a special intentional focus on the independent, mom-and-pop, and street food operations that make dining out in the city great and fun.
Eater NY will be tracking where Mamdani dines out during his time as the mayor of New York City. So far, this includes Queens restaurants Boishakhi, Kabab King, and Zaab Zaab

Zaab Zaab
Mamdani has been a fan of the Elmhurst Thai restaurant known for its Isan cuisine. Naturally, he stopped by for a meal in early January. He ordered the popular duck larb as well as sticky rice and skewers, per the restaurant’s Instagram.

Also, mayor ate crying tiger steak, beef tartar and dessert Bua Loy glutinous sticky rice balls.
