Big, juicy, super sweet peaches in August are exactly what we’re passionate about growing here at Friske Orchards, and that requires multiple thinning operations during the different stages of fruit development!

Here you’re seeing thinning operation numero uno of this season! Strategic early-season blossom thinning with these power-driven thinning tools has made our hand thinning operation (coming down the line in a few weeks) significantly easier than it used to be back in the day!

As you will hear Farmer Friske say, we will be hand thinning these same trees in a few weeks once the fruit is about the size of a grape. But the amount of blossoms we are able to take off in this early stage of bloom will significantly optimize the amount of hand labor needed to finish the job.

Frost and freeze warnings hit a little different for farmers during bloom. When we see that coming, we know we’ll be up all night trying to save an entire season’s harvest.

When freezing temperatures hit at this time - during bloom and early growth stages, crops can be damaged in just a few hours.

We ran our irrigation system on our strawberries through the night because a constant layer of freezing water can actually protect buds from getting colder than 32°. We use our helicopter sounding giant wind machines to pull warmer air down over orchards. But sometimes, despite all the effort, we cannot prevent damage.

It’s one of those parts of farming most people never see. Long nights, checking temperatures every half hour, watching forecasts constantly, and hoping the sun warms things up before too much damage is done.

We’ve always called Dad the weather man his whole life for a reason. ❤️ When an entire crop is at risk, knowing the weather and knowing/finding ways to mitigate the risk is fundamental to your very livelihood for at least an entire season.
