Here’s a little update and the Big and Little pen. 🦖 the Kiki’s are grown and both girls are laying. The Indios are almost grown and the girls turned out beautiful and the boys are getting Tall! I haven’t measured one yet but they are living up to the Gigante part of the name. The Brahma hens are also grown and one is laying pretty consistently.
As for the silkie pen I should have an exciting update in the next day or two! I checked the eggs they are sitting on this morning and I believe there’s an escapee in the making 🐣 🫣 so that update will be coming soon 😊

Well.. it’s been a while again so here’s the update on our wild days on the farm.. Richard found a red bellied woodpecker on the road and it had been injured and was over heating on the asphalt. We gave it water, mealworms, some AC and a couple hours in the dark and quiet and then we let it go and it flew off like nothing happened.

We had been dealing with an egg stealing/chicken killing predator for a month and hadn’t been able to catch it on the cameras till one night we found out we had a possum AND a rat visiting the silkies at night. We dealt with the bigger danger and the chicken loss has stopped but we are still working on the rat issue. We lost a white silkie and poor little Black Bean though 😢

And last but certainly not least, we had a HUGE hog break into our Indio/Kikiriki pen and eat all their food and set them free. So now we have about 200lbs of pork in the big freezer and an anatomy/ butcher lesson for all the kids including a friend that had spent the night at our house the night before. 😂

Here’s my current color variety 🤩 Yeah yeah, I know, they’re dirty 🙄 I clean their nest boxes ( roll away metal and plastic) almost daily but I have an egg eater and some teenage birds that roost in them at night. The rainbow flock is halfway through its second year of development and I’ve been so lucky with the birds I’ve found or hatched. This work can be so rewarding sometimes 🥰 I can’t wait to figure out who is laying the Steele bloom over an olive egg!

I know it’s been a long time since I posted but between the kids summer camp, family birthdays, a nieces trip to the ER and TWO weddings, the beginning of our summer has been HECTIC to say the least. All the while still raising birds who at last count were up to 70 so the Dragon Dens are at max capacity 😂 we are over run with Roos after this years hatching eggstravaganza and processing day is coming soon. We are just waiting these last couple weeks for about three birds I’m still unsure of to either lay or crow. The feather brains had a rage in the cage moment a couple weeks back and plucked each others tails and saddles so I’m not sure who are boys because that’s usually my sure fire sighn for the young males. And with all the work put into hatching for hens I don’t want to mistakenly harvest a good egg layer. Speaking of which! A few of the new girls ARE laying and I’ve got some colorful eggs to show you! I’ve got a couple deep olives which I expected from the Turken Ameraucana cross girls but someone is laying a Steele and I haven’t figured out who so that’s exciting 😊 thanks for reading this far and if you could comment which one of my flock leaders I should keep and which should “retire”. There’s something to be said about the “teenager” phase chicks go through 😂 some people say they look rough or ragged and some even call them “ugly” 🤐 but I think it’s where their character really starts to come out and you get a little sneak peek into their adult potential 🙌🏻. The silkies and Indio Gigante babies are about as different as any two things can be but they are the same age and were even raised in the same brooder so here’s some comparison pics of the baby Dragons 🐉 🐣

This past Saturday we went to the Ramona Flea Market in Jacksonville and someone there had these Kikiriki’s for sale. The first three pictures are how I found them. They were soaking wet/covered in something sticky, and I thought the little roo’s tail might be broken. He couldn’t hold it up. So of course I couldn’t let them stay that way and I brought them home. After a bath, some corrid and vitamins in their water and some food (they were also very hungry), they perked right up and I gave them a few days to settle before I introduced them to Kiki who is like a mother for them now. She is grown and laying and they are still just peeping so I think they are only a couple months old. So this is me introducing to you all Pigeon and Pheasant! ♥️ he is able to hold up his tail and he’s pretty proud of it. It was a fun surprise that he’s a frizzle because he was so covered in something disgusting when I found him that you couldn’t really tell. But we’re going to get these guys into the big coop with the Indios and they will never have to live that way again, and as an added bonus to finding these babies, Feathered Dragons Farm will be offering Kikiriki fertilized eggs and chicks next spring! 🌺

Out of 14 eggs that were shipped from Kentucky, we ended up with 5 healthy Indio babies and couldn’t be happier. This time next year we’ll have some huge birds from different bloodlines laying eggs of their own and we are so excited to see what these little feathered dragons turn into! 🥚 🐣 🐥

The Big Coop that we’ll probably be renaming the Dragon’s Den here in the near future with a sign to be designed and put up, is 28’x14’ and 8’ tall on one end and 7’ tall on the other. The door is 45” wide and 6’6” tall. The whole thing cost about $2500 since we had the metal left over from re-doing the roof on our house and we did it entirely ourselves. The hardware on the door is just gate hinges from Walmart and everything else came from Lowe’s.
