Derdlim (Lopez) Masten (head chef and co-owner) came to the United States from Venezuela in November of 2000. She came to Elkins to visit and stay with her cousin Thais and grew very fond of the town of Elkins. A year after arriving here she met her husband-to-be, Rob Masten, playing in a local salsa band. Derdlim grew up dancing to the music of salsa and merengue and noticed that Rob needed a lit

tle help with his moves. Once she showed him how to dance it was all over and the two were married on May 25th, 2002. Derdlim had over ten years of experience cooking and catering in Venezuela. She noticed that finding authentic Latin cuisine is very difficult in the United States, much less West Virginia and decided to bring her native cuisine to Elkins. On August 8th, 2008 twelve people took the oath of allegiance at the federal courthouse in Elkins to become naturalized U.S. Citizens. Congratulations goes to Derdlim for obtaining U.S. Citizenship: One of the most coveted gifts that the U.S. government can bestow, and the most important immigration benefit that USCIS can grant. Rob Masten (co-owner) a music teacher in Tucker County was offered the opportunity to study music, dance, and Spanish in Venezuela for one month. Not only were the music and dance great, but the food was fantastic too! And so an idea was born. Derdlim and Rob wanted to bring back the best of Latin American culture, food, and dance to Randolph County. After returning to the United States, they began to combine their ideas to open a restaurant serving authentic Latin food. Now El Gran Sabor is a popular music venue with Live Music every Wednesday and Friday night featuring popular local, regional and national acts.

To my El Gran Sabor family,

I want to speak to you with honesty and strength.

El Gran Sabor is not closing because I’m done—it’s because my life has changed, and I’ve had to make difficult decisions to move forward. The past two years have tested me in ways I never expected, but I am still here.

I am not leaving this town. This is my home. This is my community.

I’ve built this with my heart for over 20 years, and that doesn’t just disappear. I love what I do. I love who I am. And I’m proud of everything we’ve created together.

Right now, I’m taking time to rebuild and come back stronger. I am working on something new—something bigger and better but I’m not ready to share all the details yet.

What I can tell you is this: I’m not done. Not even close.

I will continue with support or without because this is who I am.

Thank you to everyone who has stood by me, believed in me, and supported El Gran Sabor through everything. I appreciate you more than words can say.

El Gran Sabor will be temporarily closed Tuesday through Friday while we work on some updates. We will keep everyone posted as things move forward.

In the meantime, we will still be accepting private events for groups of 20 people or more.

We can also deliver to offices or workplaces if orders are placed one day in advance and before 1:00 PM.

Sometimes in life, you discover what you are truly good at… and you realize it’s not just a skill it’s your passion.
For me, that passion is cooking. I know I am a good cook, but more than that, I cook with my heart. It’s part of who I am.
But in life, you also admire people who show you that NOTHING can stop a determined woman.
My mother is one of those women.
And the other is my cousin, Derdlim.
Twenty-three years ago, when many people told her it was impossible… when they said it wouldn’t work… she didn’t listen. She didn’t let fear, opinions, or obstacles stop her.
She opened a Venezuelan Latin restaurant in Elkins and built something beautiful for our community.
That strength, that courage, that faith… it inspires me.
That’s why I invited her to be part of this dream.
Now, Derdlim Chef of El Gran Sabor and I Chef of El Toro Steakhouse are coming together to create something special.
An INTERNATIONAL BRUNCH 🌎✨
Twice a month, we will bring the flavors of North America, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean right here to Elkins, WV.
