Most daughters think they're preparing for the paperwork. Or the doctor's appointments. Or the move.

What they're rarely prepared for is becoming the person everyone turns to when life suddenly feels uncertain.

That invisible role carries a weight most people never talk about.

In this week's blog, Shelley shares a real moment that perfectly captures what so many daughters experience—and why supporting the person holding everyone else together matters just as much as supporting the loved one receiving care.

If you've ever felt like you're trying to keep everyone calm while quietly carrying the weight yourself, this one's for you.

Most daughters prepare for the paperwork. Few are prepared for becoming the emotional anchor for an entire family.

✨ NOW HIRING: Night Owl With a Heart of Gold and a Brain That Works ✨

Full-Time Third Shift Care Partner
Part-Time Second Shift Care Partner
HolistiCare Homes | Elkhart, IN

Are you the kind of person who notices that Mrs. Smith didn't finish her bedtime tea and immediately wonders if something might be wrong?

Do you naturally straighten a picture on the wall, wipe the counter, fluff a pillow, or refill the ice tray without being asked?

Can you walk into a room, look around, and know what needs to be done?

If so, keep reading.
If not, this probably isn't your job.

HolistiCare Homes is not a facility.
It's a real home.

Our elders are cherished family members. We laugh together, cry together, celebrate together, and occasionally navigate life's hardest moments together.

We provide highly personalized care in a small home environment where residents are truly known, loved, and valued.

We are looking for a full-time third shift and part-time second shift Care Partner to join our small, close-knit team.

This position is ideal for someone who values relationships, meaningful work, and takes tremendous pride in leaving things better than they found them.

The Right Person:
✔ Loves older adults and treats them with dignity and respect.
✔ Can work independently without constant supervision.
✔ Notices problems before they become emergencies.
✔ Doesn't wait to be told what to do.
✔ Understands that if something needs done, you simply do it.
✔ Is dependable. Extremely dependable.
✔ Shows up on time, every time.
✔ Takes ownership.
✔ Understands that caring includes laundry, dishes, cleaning, comforting, documenting, observing, and sometimes simply sitting with someone who can't sleep.
✔ Finds satisfaction in creating peace, safety, and comfort for others.

The Wrong Person:
❌ Needs constant reminders.
❌ Believes, "That's not my job."
❌ Spends more time on their phone than engaging with residents.
❌ Calls off regularly.
❌ Watches problems and walks past them.
❌ Waits for a checklist every day.
❌ Needs to be managed minute by minute.
❌ Is looking for "just a paycheck."

A Few Truths:
We train, support, coach and expect questions. But after training and your first 90 days, we expect you to think critically, take initiative, use good judgment, and function as an autonomous professional.

If you need frequent reminders to complete routine responsibilities, this position will not be a good fit.

You will often be the only awake team member in the home overnight.

Our residents and their families deserve someone who can be trusted to see what's going on, even on the night shift.

Several members of our team have been with us for years because they value meaningful relationships, autonomy, and being part of something special.

Exceptional employees have opportunities for expanded responsibilities, leadership, and increased compensation.

We hire carefully because our residents deserve extraordinary care and our team deserves exceptional coworkers.

Requirements:
• Life experience strongly preferred.
• Dementia experience is a plus.
• Reliable transportation.
• Excellent attendance history.
• Ability to pass background checks and pre-employment screening.

Compensation: $17-$20 per hour based upon demonstrated experience, reliability, and proven ability to work independently.

Here's the most important question: Tell us about a time you noticed something important that others missed. What did you do?

Feeling stuck doesn't always mean you're doing something wrong.

Sometimes it simply means you're carrying more than one person was ever meant to carry.

We see this every day with families navigating aging parents and caregiving. The constant decisions, responsibilities, and mental load can leave even the most capable people feeling overwhelmed.

In this week's blog, Shelley shares a personal experience of hitting that wall, what helped her move forward, and why feeling stuck is often a sign that it's time to lighten the load—not question yourself.

If you've been feeling stretched thin lately, I think this one will resonate with you.

Feeling stuck and overwhelmed isn’t always a motivation problem. It’s often a sign of mental overload and too many responsibilities at once.

Most families don’t realize something important until much later:

They weren’t “behind”… they were just missing the early signs.

Changes in memory, shifts in safety, care becoming harder than it used to be, small things that slowly add up over time.

And because it happens gradually, it’s easy to normalize it.

That’s exactly why we created the Care Readiness Checklist.

It’s a simple, thoughtful tool to help you pause and look at the full picture—before decisions become urgent or overwhelming.

Inside, you’ll find clear signs to look for across: daily living and safety, emotional wellbeing and connection, health and medical needs, home and nutrition, caregiver readiness

It’s not about making decisions for you.

It’s about helping you recognize where things actually stand—so you can move forward with clarity instead of stress.

And yes, it’s completely free.

If you’ve had even a quiet thought like “I should probably start paying attention to this,” this is a good place to begin.

Ever have one of those days when nothing goes according to plan?

The to-do list gets ignored, unexpected things take over, and by the end of the day, you're left wondering if you accomplished anything at all. Many care partners know that feeling all too well.

In this week's blog, Shelley shares a personal story and a reminder that sometimes doing what was necessary still counts, even when the day didn't unfold the way you expected.

Because some days, surviving the day counts, too.

Most families aren’t avoiding preparation because they’re irresponsible.

They’re avoiding it because life is busy… and it’s hard to imagine needing certain information until suddenly you do.

Then one stressful moment happens and everyone is trying to remember: medications, doctors, emergency contacts, legal paperwork, care preferences, next steps

That’s why we created the Grab & Go Starter System.

A simple, organized way to help families gather important care information before crisis forces decisions to happen quickly.

Because preparation isn’t about being pessimistic.

It’s about reducing chaos, confusion, and unnecessary stress when life becomes overwhelming.

Everything in one place.
When it matters most.

Sometimes the person living with dementia isn't asking for more medication. Sometimes they’re asking us to slow down, to simplify, and to meet them where they are.

In this week’s blog, Shelley shares a powerful reminder about distress, behavior, and why the answer isn't always found in trying to control the person.

Because behavior is communication.

And when we understand what someone is trying to tell us, everything can begin to feel different.

What if the behaviors we call “difficult” are actually attempts to communicate? A different perspective on distress, dementia, and why changing our approach can change everything.
