Meet Fenugreek — or Methi

Fenugreek has traveled a long road to Chef Anita’s kitchen. Its fragrant seeds and leaves have been used for a very long time — with fenugreek even identified among plant remains associated with the tomb of Tutankhamun more than 3,000 years ago.

In the Roman world, it was used as a flavoring for wine and adventurous home winemakers in India have made fenugreek wine in modern times.

The name fenugreek comes from the Latin faenum graecum, meaning “Greek hay.”

In India, fenugreek is known as methi. The seeds bring a warm, slightly bitter depth, while the dried leaves add a wonderfully rich aroma to food.

FUN FACT
Fenugreek contains a natural aroma compound that smells like maple syrup. In fact, a mysterious maple-syrup smell that once drifted through New York City was eventually traced to a facility processing fenugreek seeds.

“I use fenugreek in a blend of many spices in masala sauces.” — Chef Anita

One spice. One mystery. Good meals.
