The owner and operator of Lee's Heavenly Barbecue is Renita Myles-Lee, whose mother and father have been landowners in Edwards since 1900. Her dream of having her own restaurant has roots in her heritage. Her mother passed on Southern cooking traditions to her at an early age. Her father, Percy Myles Jr.,

always told her that the key to a man's heart was through his stomach. The name "Heavenly Barbecue" was inspired by her grandfather who had a penchant for "heavenly-tasting" food. The structure now known as Lee's Heavenly Barbecue was once an ROTC classroom at Capital City Alternative School in Jackson, broken and discarded before becoming a part of Lee's faith and dream. Brick by brick and stick by stick, the Lee family repurposed it over a 3-year period, using local materials to create a cozy, homelike atmosphere. The counters and bench were made from an old chopping block. The tables came from Edwards Elementary's wood shop. The floors were salvaged from a century-old family home and the window frames came from that same wood. The benches were handcrafted by Mrs. Lee's husband and partner, Harold. The entire Lee family is engaged in the enterprise. Renita, the "Grilling Queen" hung up her corporate hat to oversees all operations. Harold, who is retired from the US Postal Service, has accepted the call into a second career, bringing his vast customer service skills to the counter at Lee's. Daughter Monike brings a lifelong passion for cooking and adds a gourmet touch and special style to the menu. Even grand-daughter Naudia contributes the techno-savvy skills of youth to the family business. The proprietors want all their guests to enjoy the "heavenly" taste of good Southern cooking in a friendly, casual atmosphere, and look forward to sharing their hospitality with you!
