Our visit to Black Diamond Distilling in Nelsonville, Ohio, a distillery born out of a Hocking College brewing program, where bourbon ages in a pair of branded boxcars and three solid pours make the drive worth it.

BRANDING UPDATE—and THANK YOU, EAST PALESTINE!

We wanted to follow up on our recent post and the incredible comments supporting our efforts in EP. More than 260 likes on a page with just 500 followers—that is remarkable engagement, and we truly appreciate it!

Because we like to think of ourselves as one of the most customer-engaged hospitality companies in the country, we wanted to share a couple of updates.

First, we are introducing our updated branding. We want everyone to know that Black Diamond is much more than a brewery and distillery—we are equally passionate about our food. That is why several locations will carry the new name Black Diamond Kitchen, with “Brewery & Distillery” as the tagline. This allows us to highlight our food while continuing to serve the craft b**r and bourbon enthusiasts who have supported us from the beginning.

Second, several people have asked, “Who is Black Diamond?” Our ownership group is small but experienced in hospitality, and its members prefer to remain behind the scenes. Every member comes from small-town Ohio—communities no different from East Palestine. There are no big-time corporate players in this group—just hardworking Ohioans who want to preserve an incredible historic building and bring something pretty special to EP.

Thank you for welcoming us with open arms. We cannot wait to serve East Palestine!

TEAM EAST PALESTINE—

We will not embarrass the individual who came onto our page and called your elected officials “liars and POSs,” but that person has been blocked.

Black Diamond is a private business, and we would not be investing in East Palestine without the support and cooperation of your elected officials and local administration. Our experience with them has been extremely positive, and they have been essential in making this project possible.

We understand the devastation caused by the train derailment, and we are deeply sympathetic to everyone who suffered as a result. However, Black Diamond was not here when it happened and was not involved in the decisions or aftermath.

Let’s be clear: our social media pages are not a forum for attacking the people who helped create this opportunity. There are other places to voice those concerns. Our pages will remain a positive space where we promote our business and celebrate the community that welcomed us.

Together, we are restoring a 100-year-old historic building that could otherwise have been lost. That is something worth embracing and celebrating—not tearing down with negativity.

TRANSPARENCY, EAST PALESTINE.

You hear the term “public-private partnership” often, but genuine partnerships rarely materialize because of regulatory hurdles or a government’s reluctance to take risks.

Not in East Palestine.

The East Palestine Community Improvement Corporation, elected leadership, city manager, and outside consultants with the Bricker firm worked alongside Black Diamond to make this project happen while preserving an important piece of local history.

Black Diamond started as a historic development company, and to this day, we do not own a building less than 100 years old. This was a match made in heaven because everyone shared the same goal: preserve the history of this building while giving it new life.

We worked hand in hand with the architects and city officials to do what we do best—protect the character and history of every building we own or lease as you can see with our first project in 2020 in Shawnee Ohio.

It takes a village, East Palestine, and you should be proud of the public servants, contractors and consultants who made this happen!

We haven’t forgotten you, East Palestine! We’ve been busy expanding, but Black Diamond East Palestine is coming together.

Restoring a historic building while creating a modern restaurant isn’t easy—but preserving its history is worth every bit of the effort.

Too early to announce an opening date but incredible shout out to the entire administration and elected officials of East Palestine for making this happen!

TEASE! 👀

We are obviously slightly biased, but we think this is going to be pretty cool. And we will add EP when ready!

We are not quite ready to launch yet as we are still sourcing the official passport booklet and adding tasting note pages for each individual location. We are a few weeks away, but the vision is coming together exactly how we hoped.

And honestly… we would like nothing more than to end up printing a whole slew of Black Diamond Passport shirts for those that complete the journey across all 9 locations. 🍻🥃

EP, we wanted to share a little history of the Black Diamond story through some recent press coverage. This adventure actually began in Shawnee, Ohio — a historic coal town in Southeast Ohio.

Most people assume Black Diamond started with the Brewery & Distillery, but the true catalyst for where we are today was the Black Diamond Tavern. Long before acquiring the Brewery & Distillery facility in 2024, we were already working closely with the Hocking College teaching facility to source and develop our b**r program.

What started as a historic redevelopment effort in small Appalachian communities ultimately evolved into the hospitality and beverage brand you see today. Preserving history, investing in communities, and creating destinations people can be proud of has always been the mission — and East Palestine will be no different.

Shout out to Stan Boney and WKBN for this great piece. Our only objection is the use of the term “bar.” We are a Brewery & Distillery that also serves exceptional food.

We greatly appreciate the story’s emphasis on Black Diamond’s commitment to preserving the history of this building. From the initial walkthrough with the architects during the first structural survey, through every phase of the planning process, we have worked diligently to retain and showcase the building’s historic character and architectural elements.

Our commitment to history and adaptive reuse is evident in every community where Black Diamond operates, and that dedication will absolutely continue with this historically significant structure in East Palestine.

The East Palestine train depot three years ago was rundown and in need of renovation. Since then Norfolk Southern has renovated the outside with new siding, doors, roof and windows.
