Catrinas en Mi Ciudad creates immersive, outdoor art exhibits inspired by Mexico’s Día de Mu***os that showcase Mexican art and provide educational opportunities to learn about Mexico’s Día de Mu***os celebration. Our work honors cultural preservation, creative expression, and exemplifies the value of public art in public spaces, while also deepening community connections with Latino heritage.
Come by 11th Street Station to see the larger-than-life papier-mâché sculptural installation, Winged Messenger, created by the Mexican artists of Jaen Cartonería. The art piece will be on display October 13-20.
Preserving Tradition Through Art:
For Catrinas en Mi Ciudad, the presentation of monumental Día de Mu***os artwork is part of a broader effort to create opportunities for cultural preservation, artistic expression and intergenerational connection. Catrinas en Mi Ciudad has worked with Mexican and Colorado Latino artists to bring large-scale Día de Mu***os artwork into public spaces throughout Colorado. “Día de Mu***os is a living tradition that gives us a way to honor those who came before us while celebrating the culture, stories and creativity we carry forward,” said Alexis Newton, co-founder of Catrinas en Mi Ciudad. “We are grateful to create a place where art becomes a bridge between generations and where remembrance, culture and community can come together.”
Alexis Newton and Marisol Villagomez are the Co-Founders of Catrinas en Mi Ciudad. Catrinas en Mi Ciudad was founded in 2020 to promote cultural art exhibitions to showcase the art and traditions associated with Day of the Dead / Día de Mu***os.

Catrinas en Mi Ciudad produces large-scale immersive, outdoor art exhibitions inspired by Mexico's Día de Mu***os (Day of the Dead). It was created to showcase Mexican folk art and provide educational opportunities for the greater Colorado community to learn about Mexico’s Día de Mu***os celebration. Our expositions honor cultural preservation, creative expression, and exemplify the value and importance of public art in public spaces, while also deepening community connections with Latino heritage. Our goal is to engage and interact with the Colorado community through cultural art associated with a cultural holiday in which we celebrate life, while also remembering those who are no longer with us in physical form.

Jaen Cartonería:

Mexico City based Artist Collective Jaen Cartonería was founded in 2011 as a family project with the goal of spreading and preserving the traditions of Day of the Dead (Día de Mu***os). Using their neighborhood’s streets in Mexico City to showcase their handmade creations, they have received national and international recognition for their monumental skeleton cardboard pieces.
*Catrinas en Mi Ciudad owns the only skeleton art pieces of Jaen Cartonería in the United States.
The Winged Messenger larger-than-life art piece was created in 2024 by artisans from Jaen Cartonería, specializing in monumental works of traditional Mexican cartonería—handcrafted sculptures made primarily from paper and cardboard. The installation will be on display at 11th Street Station October 13-20.
*This is the first time that an art piece of Catrinas en Mi Ciudad has traveled to Durango, CO.
