Today we are honored to recognize JMO’S, a local family-owned food truck with a story that is about so much more than food.
On June 22, 2024, this family’s world changed forever when their son and brother, James “J-Mo” Coby Martinez, just 21 years old, unexpectedly passed away in a tragic car accident. There are no words that can truly describe the heartbreak of losing a child, a brother, and someone so deeply loved. ❤️
A tragedy like this stops your world, even though the world around you never stops moving.
For their family, getting back into everyday life felt almost impossible. James’ dad, Javier, had worked at the same job for 11 years, and James worked there alongside him. They shared countless moments together, and after losing his son, Javier simply could not bring himself to walk back into that place without James. He made the difficult decision to leave his job.
James’ brother Joel tried to keep going by working multiple shifts. His brother Joshua also lost his job while struggling with the weight of the loss and trying to find a way forward. His sister Jazlyn stepped away from her job to grieve and be there for the family, while his mom, Jessica, took time away from work to help everyone through the hardest season of their lives.
Then the months began to pass.
The bills continued to come. Life kept moving, but their family wasn’t ready to simply go back out, find another job, and pretend everything was okay.
So they sat together and started talking about what they could do as a family.
They wanted to build something that could help them move forward, but they also wanted to create something that would keep James’ memory alive.
James had recently discovered a love for cooking and grilling, something he especially enjoyed sharing with his dad. Those moments between a father and son became some of the memories they wanted to hold onto.
That is when the idea of starting a food truck was born. 🌮🍔
From the beginning, they knew it couldn’t just be any business. It needed to have meaning. It needed to carry a piece of James with them everywhere they went.
Choosing the name took some time because they wanted something that represented him and would allow his name to live on. Then they came across one of the nicknames James was known by:
“J-Mo.”
They knew immediately.
JMO’S was the name. 💙
What started from unimaginable heartbreak became a way for this family to come back together, create something of their own, and honor the son and brother they miss every single day.
Today, every time they fire up the grill, serve a plate of food, or see a customer enjoying something they’ve made, James is still a part of it.
JMO’S isn’t just a food truck.
It’s a family.
It’s a memory.
It’s a way of keeping James’ love for cooking and grilling alive.
And most importantly, it is their way of making sure that James “J-Mo” Coby Martinez will never be forgotten. ❤️
We are honored to recognize JMO’S on our Hispanic Heritage Wall of Fame and to share the beautiful meaning behind this family business.
