Dear past present and future Deeps coffee quaffers,
I had planned to let you know by now that I was going to miss some of the 2021 market season so I could be with my mother during what turned out to be her waning days. My beautiful mom and BFF slipped away in late May.

By now most of the work of disassembling the trappings of a long life well lived is finished and I find I can hardly recognize my comparative leisure.

Of relevance to you: I like the relaxed pace of roasting to order instead of trying to make a presentable showing of abundant and diverse coffees for every Wed and Sat market. The brave choice for me now is not to keep going with that, instead it‘s to pause and rediscover some of the things I love but have been too busy to do the last 15 years. You have all been so generous and inspiring with your tales of adventure and creation. Did you ever notice how I soaked them up from the other side of the counter? Not surprising I would eventually want to make some fresh memories of my own - doing more dog agility, watching my grandies play music and sports, paddling a boat, visiting friends in OR, various homely pursuits.

I’m still passionate about coffee. It continues to be what I look forward to most about tomorrow. I will continue to roast all the coffee you want. I haven’t stopped buying coffees that sound intriguing and without recurring market deadlines I can usually roast your coffee the day you call me, and make pickup easy or deliver it on my bike - as much or as little as you like. You can share my name and number with your friends. Thanks to you, I am still growing my list of devotees! Don’t be shy; II meant it when I said you could get my coffee all year ‘round. All you have to is text, call, or email me.
Ciao for now, Kim Herschler, Deeps Coffee

Deeps will be at the Duluth Farmers Market this Saturday June 6 from 8-12. I will have whole bean and ground to order coffees from Mexico Guatemala Peru Sumatra Ethiopia and Burundi. All coffees will have been roasted Thursday and Friday of this week - so extra fresh as usual. Bags will be 15 and cash, check, card are all fine. if you would like to pick up coffee at the door at the back of my booth thereby avoiding inside space, you may do that as well. Eventually i hope to have a prepay option up here on facebook. When will depend on when tech help's available😉
I will continue to do bike deliveries all summer; just call or text me at 218-349-3889!.
Hope to see you soon.

I realize I haven’t written anything for Facebook in ages but thought I should let you know I continue to roast during non- market months and especially now am happy to special order roast for you for pick up or delivery. As all my winter customers know, we can exchange coffee and compensation without interrupting our various sequestration’s!!!!! It’s all done at the front door, yours or mine. Please text me to inquire about what’s available and we can go from there. I continue to be excited to get up in the morning to drink Deeps and so will you!!! Text me at 218-349-3889. ☕️🙏

Continued thanks to all of you who've left your coffee comfort zones and tried my coffee! Before I update my entire list of current farmers market and offerings for shipment, I want to tell you about 2 new coffees I'm adding in August: a Kenya AA, Kiangoi with descriptors I found irresistible, didn't even roast and taste first: raspberry, bittersweet chocolate, aromatic cedar, carmelized balsamic. Can't wait...
And...I'm getting 132 lbs of a Gayo Mt Sumatra that I tasted this am. Without being dark roasted, it has the signature rich depth I've been missing in other coffees from the Pacific/Indonesia: "sweet and herbaceous, ripe green pepper and grapefruit flavors (these escape me; truly, there's something of the Emperor's New Clothes in all this!!!!) and heavy, juicy mouthfeel"...these attributes I get! Stay tuned for the aforementioned updated list. Hope to see you soon.

Been avoiding the social media after reading so many NYT articles about the data corps are collecting about our lives for marketing purposes. Simply not interested, but...I recognize my coffee quaffing friends would like the convenience of updates on coffees they can get at duluth farmers markets or if from out of town, have shipped to them. FYI: most of my emailing I do on a not very intuitive iPad. Please forgive my acquiescence to the poor writing standards that result. Look forward to listings of coffees available and accompanying descriptions and...stay cool!

So happy to say this Brazil is coming our way! Call or email me to order yours.

Market season is officially over but I'm still roasting for those who've tried to resume local retail coffee offerings and found the brew "flat" to quote Tark, a Duluth Deeps coffee quaffer. Please check the list under my 3rd posting for descriptions though not all of those are available right now. Remember...it's a farm crop and therefore seasonal. I'm waiting for new Brazil (expected around Christmas) and Tanzanian, among others. I also have a Rwanda Kigeyo which manifests a balanced cup, rich, juicy body - a winelike profile, in fact. Those of you who had my Rwanda Bourbon Kanzu will like this one, too. It's the first of the new Rwandans. I also have an FTO Peru with Milk chocolate/caramel sweetness, and distinct raisin tones. Clean finish. My friend Patty and I drank this SO espresso last fall and found it swoon-worthy. Among those listed under an older post, I also have the Mexican Chiapas, the Ethiopian Natural Sidamo, the Colombian Los Naranjos from Huila, the Brazil MWP decaf. Please call with queries, requests, orders.

Don't forget the Festival of the Seasons at the DFM building on 3rd and 14th Saturday Nov 19 from 10-3. This customarily cold venue will be warm with bodies happily anticipating the Holidays! There's nothing gimmicky at this holiday event; you'll find everything lovingly home-spun!

Here are my current offerings. Don't hesitate to call or email me for bicycle delivery (weather permitting) or pick up at my house!

Colombia, Associacion Los Naranjos, Huila - a blend of beans produced by coop members including Julio Gomez whose beans many of you enjoyed this summer and the farmer who produced this year's Colombian COE winner (name escapes me) Cupping notes, not mine read: "sweet, savory, citrus, caramel, cocoa". Once I'm more familiar with it, I'll generate my own wordy but seductive pitch. Right now it's among the deepest of Deeps' offerings and Cafe Imports likes it as a single origin espresso.

Ethiopia Natural Sidamo: relatively new too. Amazing silky mouthfeel, blueberry nose and hints in the cup. Natural means the cherries are dried whole - pulp and skin still clinging to the coffee seed, more commonly known as the "bean". Some fermentation occurs in the pulp during this process resulting in pronounced fruity tones. If I had an espresso maker, I'd want to try this. Lots of crema in these naturals.

Brazil Serra Negra MWP De-caf: smooth, cocoa and caramel. Nice and dark. Very pleasing de-caf. Lovely after dinner sipping.

Mexico Chiapas Santa Teresa: clean, subtle caramel and bittersweet choco-tones. Usually my darkest roast. Full bodied with a pungent roasty edge.

Guatemala Huehuetenango SHB Pacamara, Finca La Providencia: silky mouthfeel, juicy like a new Beaujolais. Happy to inhabit your mouth 0 mild, gentle. Exotic large bean.

Brazil Mogiana Natural Yellow Bourbon Pocos de Caldas: smooth, chocolatey, excellent as a single origin espresso. Lots of crema. Like the Brazilian de-caf: replaces dessert as an after dinner sipping pleasure. My biggest seller this year.
Very accessible coffee!

Tanzania Mbeye Isende: delicate tea-like aromatics: I detect cedar - very pleasant. Eloquent raspberry/chocolate tones. A versatile coffee with great character.

Guatemala Atitlan Finca La Providencia: no la misma finca como la Pacamara: Distinct cherry complemented by deep rich dark chocolate. Very creamy body. Friends at Cafe Imports like this one as a single origin espresso, as well.

New espresso blend - as yet to be named: Mexican, Brazilian, and Ethipian. Good as a manual pour-over as well. Drips well, in other words! Double the crema with 2 naturals in the blend. I'm aiming for something sweet, smooth, swoonfully chocolate. A work in progress.

FTO Peru: haven't roasted this one yet. I'll get back to you with notes from this season's tasting. Last year's notes: clean, smooth, good body, and chocolate!

That's it for now. If you see something you like, email me at [email protected].
