Retirement Traps New Federal Retirees Miss
As someone who helps families navigate the full scope of retirement planning, I often see new federal retirees surprised by some common pitfalls. Pension benefits can be delayed for several months, so it’s important to have enough liquid cash set aside to cover expenses during the transition. Retirement also brings a new mix of taxable income—from pensions, TSP withdrawals, Social Security, Roth conversions, and required minimum distributions—all interacting differently than during your working years. Annual leave payouts can bump your taxable income the year you retire, but lower income afterward may open the door to requesting a Medicare surcharge reconsideration. Many longtime savers find it tough to start withdrawing from their TSP, even though those early retirement years are often the best time for travel, family, and enjoying what you've worked for. Survivor benefit decisions also play a big role in a spouse’s federal health coverage, which means coordinating your pension, TSP, tax strategy, health care, and investments is essential to making the most of your retirement.

2027 Social Security COLA: 3.2% to 3.6%
Keeping an eye on Social Security adjustments is vital for effective retirement planning. Current projections for the 2027 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) are in the low-to-mid 3% range—slightly above the ~3% increase beneficiaries are seeing for 2026. This annual update is based on the average wage-earner inflation index, using Early, Mid, and Late-Q3 data compared to the same period last year. Early-Q3 showed consumer prices up by a little over 3% year-over-year, a bit softer than Late-Q2, but we’re still waiting for two more key inflation readings before the final number is set. If the higher forecasts hold, an average monthly benefit of around $1,900 could rise to about $2,000, reflecting a ~$70 monthly increase. The official COLA for 2027 will be announced on October 14, once all Late-Q3 inflation data is in, and new benefit amounts will begin with Early-Q1 2027 payments. As someone who helps families navigate all aspects of retirement and long-term financial security, I see how these annual adjustments can impact planning. Staying informed on these changes helps you make sound decisions about your future.

How Experienced Agents Help Shape New Professionals
As someone who’s dedicated to guiding families through holistic financial planning, I’ve seen first-hand how vital mentorship is for those just entering our profession. Seasoned advisors play a major role in shaping new professionals — not just by sharing technical know-how, but by modeling ethical standards, effective client service, and resilient communication. This kind of support helps newcomers develop strong negotiation and teamwork skills, setting them up for long-term success. The same way I guide clients through investment strategies, retirement planning, and tax-saving approaches, experienced mentors help build a foundation that supports both personal and professional growth in our industry.
