Bánh Mì — A Vietnamese Classic with French Roots 🥖
Bánh mì was born from the meeting of French and Vietnamese food cultures. The French introduced the baguette to Vietnam during the colonial era in the late 19th century. Over time, Vietnamese bakers and cooks transformed the bread and filled it with local flavors: savory meats, pâté, pickled carrots and daikon, cucumber, cilantro, chili, and flavorful sauces.
What makes Vietnamese bánh mì bread different?🥖
Unlike a traditional French baguette, which is typically longer with a thicker, chewier crust and denser crumb, Vietnamese bánh mì is designed to be light and airy inside with a thin, delicately crispy crust that crackles with every bite. Vietnamese baking techniques and historically, sometimes the use of rice flour alongside wheat, helped create this signature texture.
