Our sweet old man crossed the rainbow bridge this afternoon. 💔 While this wasn’t totally unexpected, we never expected it to happen the way it did today.
Morty was the sweetest boy with humans. He tolerated all the poking, prodding, medications, fluids, and blood draws we threw at him without much fuss. He even attended a few events and made his TV debut on his very first day with us!
He was such a good boy…to humans. Other cats were sometimes a different story. Morty was scrappy, held a grudge, and could absolutely throw down—even with no teeth. (Check out the last slide for evidence but trigger warning it’s a pretty intense cat fight.) Once he proved his place in fight club, he was only allowed in the lounge with supervision, but he was perfectly happy to go back to his condo at night for his special food and alone time.
He had the funniest little personality. His nubby Manx tail would wiggle and wag when he was happy and getting brushed, and he could make everyone smile simply by playing or sleeping with his face smashed directly into a pillow.
Morty had a long list of health problems that we thought were fairly well managed. Stage 2 CKD, pancreatitis, no teeth—and despite it all, he actually seemed to be improving the last time our vet saw him and we did blood work. Unfortunately, today we learned he also had congestive heart failure and a mass in his abdomen.
When we saw him open-mouth breathing for the first time today, we rushed him to the emergency vet. They thought he was stable enough for us to bring him “home” for palliative care, but he declined incredibly quickly on the drive back to the cafe.
We are so incredibly grateful to Roadrunner Relief for once again being there for us, especially on such short notice, and for helping Morty through his final moments as peacefully as possible. 💜
We wish Morty could have found a forever home, but we know he was deeply loved by everyone who met him at the cafe. He may not have been with us for even a year, but this sweet, scrappy old man left one hell of an impression.
Rest easy, Morty. We’ll miss your little nubby tail, your ridiculous personality, and your willingness to fight absolutely everyone. 💜🌈
