Over this series we've looked at the problem, why it matters, who it affects, and where things stand today. Respect for the land is one of Choggiung's core values, and right now, that respect means following the current restriction on ATV use while damaged areas recover. Together, we can protect access for generations to come. Learn more: https://choggiung.com/land/our-lands

Respect for the land is one of Choggiung's core values, and right now, showing that respect means following the current restriction on ATV use. This isn't about restricting access forever; it's about giving damaged tundra, berry patches, and habitat the time they need to recover. Accountability now, means use and continued access for our descendants, just not with ATVs. Full details: https://choggiung.com/land/our-lands

This isn't an abstract environmental issue, it's personal. Berry patches take years to recover once roots are crushed and soil is compacted, which means fewer blueberries, cranberries, and salmonberries for our families. Wildlife feels it too: noise and habitat disruption during nesting and calving seasons can push moose, caribou, birds, and fish away from the areas we depend on. Respect for the land means protecting the resources our subsistence way of life depends on, so they're still here for damaged areas to recover into. Learn more: https://choggiung.com/land/our-lands

Tundra isn't like a lawn or a forest trail — it can't just grow back. A thin soil layer, saturated ground, and a short growing season mean recovery is measured in decades, not seasons. Mosses and lichens that took 30, 50, even 100 years to establish can be disturbed in a single afternoon. Respecting the land means recognizing how long it takes to heal, and that once damage is done, it's largely out of our hands. Learn more: https://choggiung.com/land/our-lands

Choggiung's lands are more than property -- they're our subsistence grounds, our culture, and our children's inheritance. Right now, increasing ATV traffic is leaving trails that take decades to heal. Learn more on our website, here: https://choggiung.com/land/our-lands

Over the next few weeks, we're breaking down why this is happening, who it affects, and what we can do about it together.
