š²š½ Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexicoās 1862 victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla. It is often mistaken for Mexican Independence Day, which actually came earlier on September 16, 1810, marking the beginning of Mexicoās fight for independence.
The Battle of Puebla happened decades later after Mexico had already gained independence. Under Napoleon III, France wanted to establish a monarchy in Mexico to expand its influence in the Americas and counter the growing power of the United States. This led to the French invasion of Mexico and the Battle of Puebla.
Mexican troops, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza, defeated a much larger and better equipped French army. Today the defeat symbolizes pride, unity, and perseverance. It has grown into a celebration of Mexican culture with traditional food, music, and community gatherings.
Chelaās is proud to offer a space where we can come together, celebrate, and enjoy the traditions that make this day so important. Join us for great food in honor of Cinco de Mayo! š²š½
