::: FRIDAY, MAY 29 :::

One of Detroit’s most celebrated musical artists—saxophonist, composer and educator Marcus Elliot (.elliot)—returns to Moondog in new trio formation. Joined by first call Detroit drummer Louis Jones III () and virtuosic guitarist Sasha Kashperko (), the possibilities are endless with these 3 improvisors in musical exchange.

Fresh off of a highly active 2025 unveiling Sounds From The Park—a live ensemble series presenting original compositions in 5 of Detroit’s most iconic green spaces—Elliot continues to inspire and deepen connections to Detroit’s creative community. Working as a jazz saxophone instructor at Wayne State and directing the Creative Arts Orchestra at University of Michigan, Elliot is a highly influential figure in Detroit and beyond. Always exploring tone, color, melody and sonic capacities with a variety of woodwinds and electronics, we can’t wait to hear where Elliot transports us this time.

We also welcome the return of Griffin Brown () to Moondog! NYC-based poet, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Brown first brought his solo tour to Moondog in October 2024. His musical forms range from improvised soundscapes to adventurous electronic pop constructions. At home, he’s an expansive and in-demand sonic collaborator and we’re excited to support him on the road as he shares new music, a solo LP entitled “Begriffen.”

Doors open at 7 and music begins at 8pm. Advance tickets are available on RA for $16 and a limited number will be available at the door for $20. It’s another sonic adventure we recommended you not miss!

Next Saturday, May 16, we welcome a working musician of considerable renown—pianist/organist/singer Bill Heid () convenes with us for an evening of instrumental variations in jazz, blues & funk. Joining him for 2 sets is the all-Detroit rhythm section of double bassist Trevor Lamb (.lamb.music) and drummer Ryan Rose ().

A Pittsburgh native, Heid got his start in the mid-60s on the Hammond B-3, performing with the likes of Grant Green, Sonny Stitt, David “Fathead” Newman, Grachan Moncur III, Rodney Whitaker and Robert Hurst. He went on to tour with blues greats like John Lee Ho**er, Koko Taylor and Jimmy Witherspoon. After a long stint in Chicago, Heid also lived in Detroit for 15 years, working as a first-call blues pianist. At 77, Heid is a longstanding master of his craft. We look forward to welcoming him back to Detroit, and hearing a lifetime a music flow through his playing.

Tickets are $15 and will be exclusively available at the door. Another great evening of music is in store ~~~

Formed by Kate Ferencz and Ben Furgal in 2011, Evil Sword has released 5 albums of their recordings and often tour a live performance they describe as “a parade of dreams and nightmares.”

In support, Kalamazoo synth punk trio Spatter Pattern (.pattern) pull up as well as Ypsilanti-based Baltimorean rapper, beatmaker & label head Height Keech ().

A worthy deviation from your regularly scheduled Thursday programming ~~~

On Friday, May 1 we will close down our regular café hours in solidarity with International Workers’ Day. As a business that only operates on weekends, taking a Friday service off does present financial challenges, but we fully believe that untangling ourselves from this system of brutal corporate oligarchy needs to happen NOW. Our elected officials cannot continue this oppressive and inhumane course and we wish to take a stand with our comrades here in Detroit, in belief that a better, more equitable and just future is possible.

We will return to service on Friday evening to honor a concert and release party we’ve been anticipating for quite some time. Presenting one of the most exciting new recorded works by a Detroit artist that we’ve heard this year—Givhan () and GULLEY’s () new mini-album Good Grief is out and it’s spreading like wildfire, and worthy of playing on repeat throughout 2026.

Leaning into new possibilities together. Peace + Light ~
