Well, well, well...Detroit Crain's Business reports that the Hotel Yorba has a new owner!

The new owner is Kahlil Assad, owner of Detroit-based The Air King HVAC company - and he bought the Yorba for $1.8 million.

Kahil has already met with Hubbard Farms residents at the Yorba for a community BBQ in August to hear feedback and is considering what next steps make sense for the building and any renovations.

Could be a combination of hotel space, plus affordable and potentially a smattering of market-rate housing.

The Yorba was built in 1926, was listed for $for sale at 2.5 million and cost less than $200,000 to build, ($3.77 million in today’s dollars).

Exciting to see something potentially positive happening with the Yorba!

If you are Old School Southwest Detroit - at some point in your life, you likely (but not for all) called this home - just as so many on the other end of Vernor called the Patton Park Center home or those near Michigan and Livernois called the Boys Club home!

The gym, the running track above the gym, the pewabic tiled pool, the pool tables on the main floor and who can ever forget those government lunches in the basement area for that amazing summer programs they used to run year after year for youth…..and still there was so much more. As for those summer-time lunches - if you were hungry back in the day - you understand!

This will be a massive rebuild and the Y was built like a tank - won’t be easy putting in new electrical, plumbing, heating, cooling, etc.

Nonetheless - Duly’s Nation celebrates this and prays it all works out!

Well…the votes are in for best coneys in the area - and we definitely want to thank everybody who voted for Duly’s.

Well, we didn’t make this list, we know that in the hearts of those who belong to Duly’s Nation - we are always a top choice.

Duly’s remembers this well - and the ledge of the building next door on Vernor where you would sit and catch the Baker bus (Vernor for those not in the know!) going West-bound toward Springwells and beyond.

At Duly’s we don’t make the news - only report it… especially when it comes concerns related to the owners of the bridge.

With the help of the city, a concrete plant moved into Cadillac Heights. Now its residents say pollution from the plant is driving them out.

Leave it to our loyal members of Duly’s Nation to not let the smallest change go unnoticed.

For decades, there was an intercom right next to the toaster, yellowed plastic over time that had a speaker connected to it and a button you could push to talk to only God knows who and where. It was truly for its time some likely impressive RadioShack 1970s top level technology!

We did remove it recently because even we couldn’t figure out where this went to or who you would talk to? Our best guess is that at one time it went up to the apartments upstairs above Duly’s… but that secret alas is lost to the sands of time.

High-tech renovation… we covered the hole with a metal plate. Next.

We also haven’t went out and  and bought the brown paint yet to paint over the hole in the wall, where we took out the old cooler and covered it up with plywood…. Will do so in time.

Very Happy 90th birthday to Southwest Detroit's very own Sister Elizabeth Fleckenstein ("St. Tiz"), IHM!

Sr. Tiz has dedicated her entire life to helping others, working with young people and making the world a better place.

There are good people doing great things all around us - have faith and as Ghandi said: Be the change you wish to see in the world!!

Happy Birthday Sr. Tiz!

Vernor’s, Better Made chips and Duly Dogs… The best of Detroit - reunited at last at Duly’s!

We now have Vernor’s by the can at Duly’s! Old school, Dulys Nation will remember we served Vernor’s back in the day. Regrettably, Coca-Cola stopped providing it to us over 20 years ago

Just as regrettable, our 40 year old Coca-Cola soda dispensers gave out. To our regret, the Coca-Cola distributor could not get us updated (and small) soda distribution equipment for our equally as small and humble 100+ year-old restaurant.

Pepsi jumped at the chance… we have tripled soda: Pepsi, sweet tea, fruit punch, lemonade, Pepsi-zero, Mountain Dew, Orange Crush and Starry (takes like Sprite)

We know that some of our Duly’s Nation family will be disappointed at not being able to have Coca-Cola… And we regret things just didn’t work out. On the other hand, for those who are looking for a variety, we have tripled what we now have available for your favorite breakfast, burger or Duly Dog!

By removing stainless steel counter for the new pop and soda dispensary, we are also able to add in cans of Vernor’s, which we are thrilled to have back!
