The pandemic has exacerbated food insecurity across the country. In Detroit, food insecurity has been exacerbated by the pandemic, when it was already 39% before. Chef Ederique Goudia has been a driving force in the city in the mission to combat food insecurity and provide access to fresh and healthy food to the communities that need it most.
Ederique was born and raised in Wallace, Louisiana and spent most of her childhood with her grandfather on his farm. That deep connection she has to the land and to the food that grows from it roots into her relationship to the community that it sustains. She has created and is a part of many businesses that aid Detroit in the mission to become food secure.
Ederique is the co-owner of Gabriel Hall, a New Orleans-style creole restaurant and music venue she has been working on with partner Damien Gabriel. She is also the leader of Make Food Not Waste's Upcycling Kitchen, where she turns surplus foods into delicious and nutritious meals for the community around Eastside Detroit. Ederique is a co-founder of Taste the Diaspora Detroit, a wildly successful Black History Month initiative that highlights Detroit’s Black-owned restaurants and farmers while celebrating the immense impact of African foodways.
In The Business of Food is where Ederique aims to bridge the gap and become an ally to the small food business owners of Detroit, through consulting and mentorship. And that’s not all she does! She’s the Program Director of Detroit Food Academy, Board member for The Eastside Community Network, and member of the Junior League of Detroit.
She doesn’t just wear multiple hats during , but every month and we’re so grateful for all the work Ederique does!
