It's honestly disappointing to see how quickly people tear down small businesses on social media.
A local business is trying an AI phone answering system, and instead of giving them a little grace, people are using it as another reason to criticize them. The reality is that many small businesses are doing everything they can just to keep their doors open. Sometimes that means trying new technology when you're short-staffed.
Trust me—they aren't using technology because they're trying to avoid people. They're using it because they're trying to survive.
This is one of the reasons we've taken a step back from social media ourselves. It's a great place to share specials, events, and connect with our customers, but somewhere along the way it also became a place where people feel comfortable hiding behind a keyboard and attacking local businesses over things they often don't fully understand. It's honestly gotten out of hand if you ask us.
The truth is, restaurants everywhere are struggling to find dependable help. If you've ever wondered why businesses are trying new ways to answer phones or streamline operations, it's because finding and keeping staff isn't nearly as easy as people think.
And here's the part everyone seems to forget...
The same businesses you're roasting in the comments are often the ones donating gift certificates, sponsoring your kids' sports teams, supporting local fundraisers, helping benefits, and saying "yes" whenever someone asks for a donation. Nobody forces them to do that—they do it because they care about this community and choose to invest in it.
Instead of looking for reasons to tear local businesses down, maybe we should recognize everything they quietly do behind the scenes.
At the Model T Inn, we're still looking for a reliable cook to join our team. Unfortunately, that's one job AI can't do... yet. 😉 If it could, we'd probably have one wearing an apron tomorrow—not because we don't want people, but because dependable employees have become so hard to find.
Small businesses aren't giant corporations. They're your neighbors. They're local families trying to make payroll, keep the lights on, support their employees, give back to their communities, and continue serving the people who walk through their doors every day.
Support local. Be kind. Give people a little grace. We could all use more of that.
