Nicholas Thorne was one of the founding settlers of Delavan and the owner of the Lake Lawn property before he sold it to the Mabie Brothers. What Thorne did next says everything you need to know about the man: after selling 400 acres to the circus, he joined it. Thorne had shipped out on a whaler at age 17, crossed the equator four times before his 20th birthday, and apparently found the idea of traveling with a circus more appealing than settling into life as a former landowner. He traveled with the Mabie Circus for three seasons as a singing clown.

In two days, the Lake Lawn Queen departs for the third Vineyard Voyages dinner of the summer; Moet & Chandon and Joseph Phelps Vineyards, guided by Paul Nguyen of Moet Hennessy, four courses paired from bow to stern.
