Gem City Catfé

Gem City Catfé We are a coffeehouse, serving wine and cocktails, with adoptable rescue cats living on site! 🐾 This is a win-win situation. Anne’s Hill Historic District.
(1802)

The goal of Gem City Catfé is to foster positive interactions between cats and people, in an expectation free environment. People get a super cool place to hang out with cats. Cats are able to avoid being in a shelter, socialize, and find families. Gem City Catfé opened January 2, 2018 after a year of construction on our historic building located in St. Our property, built in 1885, was originally

a side by side duplex and had some commercial use throughout the years, including a plumbing supply store. Our new layout features three areas: the cat lounge, the cafe seating, and the upstairs art gallery space. We have separate air systems for the cat lounge so that even people with allergies can visit. Gem City Catfe was started to advocate for rescue cats and animal welfare with a new approach. We wanted to create an approachable and enjoyable atmosphere that would be welcoming to those new to the rescue scene as well as educational for others looking to get more involved. Our cat lounge is home to 18 adoptable, feline friends from our 501(c)(3) non-profit rescue partner, Gem City Kitties. Our full service espresso bar which serves fair trade coffee, tea, bakery items as well as wine and cocktails. We also have a separate art gallery with additional seating upstairs with plenty of large tables to spread out and for activities like coffee brewing courses, TNR Certification workshops, and available for private rentals.

Kuna our *certified weird girl* (in the best way) came to the Catfe in June of 2025 and we are THRILLED to report that she has finally been adopted!!! Kuna is such a sweet and smart cat, and our team really loved her, but she couldn't ever get comfy at the Catfe. We all did our best to accommodate her preferences, but we knew she needed a permanent place of her own to start to relax and feel at ease. She is settling in and adjusting to her new home. We wish Kuna all the best!

We're also celebrating these other kitties that found homes in May!

The Catfe is feeling EXTRA fancy lately with all of these dapperly dressed tuxedo cats! 😍

🥸 Diamond: Diamond is a little ball of love. She loves being held and is so adamant about it that she'll try to climb up your leg to get there! She's got a cute little mustache mark on her nose that will win you over. Diamond is still getting used to the other cats and the lounge, but we hope she will make an appearance soon!

🎩 Lucille: Lucille and her sister Snoopy are a pair of absolute sweethearts! Both are tuxedos; Snoopy has a white stripe down her face and Lucille has one white spot on her mouth, like a reverse beauty mark. Lucille is the more confident of the two and has been making appearances in the cat lounge, meeting people, playing with toys, and exploring all the high shelves. She is playful and inquisitive, but she's also always down for a nice snuggle! Lucille and Snoopy will need to go to a home together as they are a bonded pair. We think they will make wonderful companions for anyone looking for some gentle lap cats!

🦴 Snoopy: Snoopy is still adjusting here at the Catfe, but we have been loving getting to know this cutie! Snoopy is a tuxedo with a white stripe down her nose. She arrived with her sister, Lucille, another tuxedo. The two of them are best friends and are often found crammed into the same bed for a nice cozy nap. They are a bonded pair, so they will need to go home together. Snoopy is a bit more shy than Lucille, but she loves people and is all about getting some cuddles and pets and doing some big purrs! If you're looking for a pair of absolute cuddle bugs, Snoopy and Lucille could be the perfect fit for you!

You may have noticed Mr. Baby's absence from the cat lounge recently. Not to worry! He has enjoyed some foster stays because we noticed he was ready to retire from his tenure as a Cat Lounge Resident. He'll be ready to permanently retire soon, and we promise to bring him back for a retirement party, where he can be the only cat in the lounge and get an extra special send-off.

In the meantime, we've been looking for another cat to be buddies with our longtime Resident Cat, Meowrville Wright. When Sunny Side Up entered the Cat Lounge, we were so surprised to see Meowrville showing interest in being friends! Meowrville is independent and typically doesn't show a ton of interest in younger cats, but these two totally hit it off. As of now, he's in his 90-day probabitionary period and it looks like he'll be here to stay for the near future! It's extra cute that these two look alike and we are so happy Meowrville found a kitty pal!

We carefully select residents here with us to make sure they will enjoy the space, and it will be a positive experience for them. Resident cats help in several ways.

😻 First, they are familiar with the routines and spaces, so they can help normalize the environment for new cats acclimating.

😻 Second, they are far less likely to get sick and aren't bringing new germs into the space. In a communal colony, we are constantly managing disease prevention and control. By keeping a couple of cats with strong immune systems and a low stress response on site, we can help the other cats stay healthier and reduce the amount of new germs rotating into the colony each week.

😻 Third, very friendly cats are wonderful ambassadors for cats as a species and help us change their perception in the community. We often hear from people who had a negative cat experience growing up, and sadly, this has negatively shaped their view of cats in general. We love to help change perceptions and reduce the fears that adults or children may have when they see cats, because this helps the community care for the outcomes of cats here overall.

A moment for this sweet floofy guy, Penz!

Penz is a super sweet boy who takes a minute to warm up to people, but once he does LOVES pets and attention. He is inquisitive and a quick learner of routine. Penz will meow until you notice him and give him the love he deserves. This sweet, fluffy boy (just look at that tail!) will win your heart over with how he'll jump up into your hand for more pets. Penz is just starting to hang out in the Cat Lounge and is becoming more confident to explore every day. If you're interested in adopting, please click on the link to fill out the application: https://www.gemcitykitties.org/adopt

If you're not interested in adopting, you can always come by the Cat Lounge to meet and play with our adoptable kitties to help socialize them before they make their way home. 🐾

UPDATE: We have VERY exciting news to share!!! After sharing about how close we were to our fundraising goal, a generous donor gifted us with a $2,000 donation to not only help us reach our goal, but surpass it!

We'd like to extend a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who donated to our Medical Fundraiser for Smokie & Friends! Every single dollar adds up, and we have officially recouped the medical expenses for Smokie, Delilah, and Gwen.

It is not lost on us how fortunate we are, and we want to acknowledge the challenges many people are facing right now. This community support reminds us that when we come together, we can care for each other in much larger ways than we could ever accomplish individually. We're so grateful to all of you for coming together to help us. We really can't do what we do without your help!

Thank you to everyone for your support and for helping us save more cats!

Join us for an afternoon of art and community this Saturday, May 9th from 12pm-2pm with artist Rachel Hall!

Rachel Hall is an oil painter, draftsman, and photographer based out of Yellow Springs, OH. She grew up in a large homeschooled, nomadic family and landed in the village in 2008. She graduated with high honors both for her Associate of Art from Sinclair Community College and for her Bachelor's from Ohio University (OU) in 2023. Among various awards for her artistic achievement across both schools and beyond, she won
the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship to study art abroad in London during her time at OU. Her work is held in the permanent collection of Sinclair and is a frequent highlight of the Yellow Springs art community. Deeply driven
by the twisting lines and shapes of the local landscape, Rachel spends all the time she can out in the beauty of the village. When not in her studio you can find her in the Glen behind an easel.

Give Rachel a follow at https://www.instagram.com/rachel_.hall/ and come by the Catfe to view her work!
