DID SCIENTISTS FIND HUMAN DNA IN A METEORITE?
A viral claim says that scientists discovered human DNA inside a meteorite more than 2 billion years old. But there is no verified scientific evidence that human DNA has been found inside a meteorite.
The confusion appears to come from real discoveries involving extraterrestrial material. NASA’s OSIRIS REx mission returned samples from the asteroid Bennu, and scientists detected all five nucleobases used by DNA and RNA, along with amino acids and other organic compounds. These molecules are important ingredients for life as we know it, but they are not DNA and they are not evidence that humans or extraterrestrial organisms were present.
Scientists are extremely careful about this distinction. Finding individual molecules associated with life is very different from finding a complete genetic system, and there is currently no evidence that human DNA originated in space or that humans arrived on Earth from another world.
The discovery is still fascinating because it shows that some of the chemistry needed for life can occur naturally beyond Earth. Meteorites and asteroid samples may therefore help scientists understand how the ingredients for life became available on the early Earth.
