Today, when people think of Dawsonville, they think of racing.
The Georgia Racing Hall of Fame.
Bill Elliott.
Chase Elliott.
The famous Dawsonville Pool Room siren.
The title “Birthplace of Stock Car Racing.”
But long before NASCAR existed, Dawsonville was known for something very different…
Moonshine.
During the early 1900s—and especially through Prohibition from 1920 to 1933—the mountains of North Georgia became one of America’s largest moonshine-producing regions. Hidden stills were scattered throughout the forests of Dawson County, where families made whiskey deep in the mountains.
Getting caught meant losing everything.
So moonshiners needed fast, reliable cars that looked ordinary on the outside but were heavily modified underneath. They upgraded engines, strengthened suspensions, and became expert drivers capable of flying down narrow mountain roads while outrunning federal revenuers.
Those late-night runs became an unofficial proving ground.
The best drivers earned reputations throughout the mountains—not because they won trophies, but because they could deliver their load and make it home.
As Prohibition came to an end, many of those same drivers began racing each other on dirt tracks across the South.
What started as friendly competitions between moonshine runners eventually helped create organized stock car racing.
That tradition led to the founding of NASCAR in 1948.
Dawsonville would go on to produce some of the sport’s biggest names, including Hall of Famer Bill Elliott, 1988 NASCAR Cup Champion, and later Chase Elliott, who carried the family legacy all the way to a NASCAR Cup Series championship.
Today, thousands of racing fans visit Dawsonville every year to experience the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame, celebrate the sport’s roots, and hear the famous Pool Room siren after every Elliott victory.
It’s a reminder that the winding roads through these mountains didn’t just carry moonshine…
They helped shape American motorsports.
We’re proud to call Dawsonville home and even prouder to celebrate the history that makes North Georgia unlike anywhere else.
