Today is the first Mother’s Day in 7 years that I haven’t worked the Mother’s Day shift.

Firstly, I acknowledge that there are loads of moms who work every Mother’s Day and not by choice; and in general moms are f*ing bad ass and my understanding of that has only grown as a mom, and watching other friends grow into their mom roles, and appreciating what my own has done for me.

But this is a big milestone for me, and for the business, that I’m not needed on one of our busiest days of the year, and that we’ve grown a team that orchestrated and encouraged me to be off today.

I’m sitting with the feeling that I wish I was there working the line or the espresso machine - not because I’m anxious how things are going on a busy day without me, or because I’m relinquishing control, but because I genuinely love our team the rush I get from slinging a fast Sunday service with them and their Sunday sillies, and the immense gratitude I have for how our community makes us feel, even and especially when our line is out the door.

I have never been more grateful for my and Mike’s own moms and all they’ve done to support us while we’ve grown Scuttlebutt (my mom literally helping me breast feed in the bathroom of our first location when I went back to work ten days postpartum - do not recommend 😵‍💫), or for the female role models we’ve surrounded ourselves with, and especially the female friendships I have of both moms and pseudo moms, who I got to start this Mother’s Day with by doing one of my favorite things - soaking in freezing ocean water with a coffee - while our team opened without me.

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the insanely bad ass moms and motherly figures in our community. This may be a Hallmark holiday but I think that’s ok, we deserve it 🪩💪🏻

Guest barista Billy in the house 👯‍♀️🕺🏻💃🏼 I can’t remember when, but sometime in the past few years one of our best friends was talking to Billy about Scuttlebutt and Billy said something like “What’s that” and our friend said “I can’t believe you’ve never been there, I feel like it’s the type of place you’d never leave”. And thus began our friendship with Billy. He pops in multiple times a day between his painting jobs around town, sometimes literally just to say hello, sometimes to drop off flowers from his garden, sometimes to grab an iced tea, and it always always always brightens our day. Last summer we were really in the weeds with a July line to the sidewalk, and we noticed Billy was going around bussing and wiping down tables for us. He started bringing us coffee beans from his travels, and told us about the years he spent working as a barista at George Howell in Boston, making hundreds of lattes a day, before he became a professional painter, so we joked and then got serious about him doing a guest barista shift. And here we are! There’s too much giggling going on but also excellent latte milk coming out, so come on down to be part of the fun!

Heyo! The days are getting longer and so are our lines! We’re looking for a couple of key people to join our Scuttlebutters gang. We work hard and expect everyone to pitch in (even owners in the dish pit style - actually, Big Mike CRUSHES dishes), but at the risk of sounding cheesy, we also have a ton of fun. We’re specifically looking for one line cook and one barista to join us. The usual spiel - experience is not required, BUT a genuine interest in learning about food and coffee, hospitality, and building a tight knit community is. Both positions could start at 3-4 days a week but ramp up to 5 days a week by June for the right candidates. Weekend availability a must.
