There are moments as a business owner that stay with you forever.

The early mornings. The long nights. The uncertainty. The sacrifices. The quiet prayers that one day the work of your hands will truly mean something to someone else.
..And then someone sends a message like this.

It reminds me that this business has never been just about cheesecake.

It’s about being invited into your lives. Into birthdays, anniversaries, family dinners, celebrations, heartbreaks, promotions, and those ordinary days when you simply want something that make life feel a little sweeter.

I will never stop being humbled that you choose VAL'S.

To know that something made with our hands and hearts has found a place in your memories is a gift I could never put a price on.

India Arie sings, “I Am Not My Hair.” I understand the message, and I respect it.

And for me, I am my hair.

You may wonder what my hair has to do with this business or post today.

Everything.

For a good part of my professional life, I felt I wasn’t supposed to draw attention to my frizzy, curly, thin hair; the hair I inherited from Léonel Jean-Bart and Marie José Labossière.

I don’t want to debate whether anyone explicitly told me not to wear it naturally, or whether there simply wasn’t the awareness or space that allowed me to feel comfortable showing up as myself.

I just knew I couldn’t fully be me.

Every morning, my routine was the same: put gel in my hair, brush it flat, wrap it tightly, and then remove the wrap in the parking lot just before walking into work. It became part of the uniform I believed I had to wear to be taken seriously.

Then I became an entrepreneur.

Somewhere along that journey, I decided to let my hair be exactly what it was meant to be. Braids. Twists. Curls. Texture. Freedom.

I wear my hair the way I want because it is part of who I am.

I’m proud that other and younger generations have more freedom to wear their natural hair without apology. Many of us weren’t raised with that same comfort. We were taught, directly or indirectly, that acceptance often meant changing ourselves.

Progress has been made through efforts like the CROWN Act and through people like Loud Woman | Journalist | Digital Creator who have helped push these conversations forward. Those changes matter.

So while India Arie reminds us that we are more than our hair; my truth compliments this song too.

My hair is me.

It carries my history. It reminds me of my mother and my father. It represents where I come from, how far I’ve come, and the freedom I’ve found.

It is woven into this business because this business has always been about showing up authentically with love, grace, dignity, and respect.

Today, I no longer flatten who I am before I walk through the door.

I simply walk in as myself.

At 48 years old, I did something I never imagined I would actually enjoy: I took my very first solo trip.

I didn’t know what to expect, but I was pleasantly shocked by how naturally people and I gravitated toward each other and by how open I was to trying new things...I experienced new foods, met some really cool people, more people than I expected, discovered different ways to enjoy a city, and realized that traveling alone doesn’t have to mean being alone.

I’ve always been the guy who plans trips with friends, so the idea of traveling solo never really crossed my mind and was out of my comfort zone...BUT this experience changed that.

It may have only been a short trip to Houston, but it was a meaningful first step. Sometimes the smallest adventures open the door to the biggest discoveries...not just about the world, but about ourselves.

Here’s to many more solo adventures ahead!

As a Haitian who earned a green card and later became a naturalized American citizen, I followed the rules.

TPS holders are not hiding. They came forward under U.S. immigration law, sought protection, worked hard, paid taxes, raised families, started businesses, and became part of the fabric of this country.

Now, many are being told to return to a country that the U.S. government itself advises Americans not to travel to because of the extreme security risks.

I cannot support or find logic in this decision.

I will do everything within my reach to advocate for the extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for my Haitian brothers and sisters.

Haiti and Haitians have too often been blamed, misunderstood, and reduced to harmful narratives. I won’t spend my energy debating those misconceptions today.

Instead, I choose action.

If you believe in fairness, compassion, and the rule of law, now is the time to speak up, organize, and support those whose lives hang in the balance.

It’s time for collective action.

June 23rd.

Today, I celebrate the birthday of my mother, Marie José Labossière.

For years, I’ve called her my latest, my greatest inspiration, but the older I get, the more I realize those words are just not enough.

Her spirit permeates everything I do. It lives in the way I love people, the way I persevere when things get difficult, the way I believe that small acts done with great care can change someone’s day. It lives in every cheesecake, every class, every conversation, every risk I’ve taken, and every lesson I’ve learned.

When cancer defined her days, she chose to fight. When life gave her reasons to quit, she chose courage. When others would have focused on the ending, she taught me to focus on how we live in the middle of the story by wanting to bake a cheesecake.

As I grow older, I am beginning to understand that my purpose may not simply be to build a business or create desserts.

My purpose is slowly unraveling before me: to become the best version of myself so that I can continue telling her story through the way I live my own.

The world knew her as Marie José Labossière.

I knew her as "Manmi" (Haitian term)
..And every day, I hope that something I create, something I build, or someone I encourage carries a small piece of her forward.
