The past few weeks have given me a lot to reflect on, and I wanted to share something that’s been on my heart.
First, thank you.
When I opened Self-Care at the Square, my hope was simply to create a place where people felt genuinely cared for. I never imagined that the business would grow almost entirely through your referrals. Because you’ve shared my name with your family, friends, coworkers, and neighbors, I’ve had to do very little advertising. That kind of trust is one of the greatest compliments I could ever receive, and I will never take it for granted.
As my business has grown, I’ve noticed something else. The people being referred to me are often coming with increasingly complex health histories, chronic pain, injuries, surgeries, autoimmune conditions, and other challenges. I consider it an incredible honor that people trust me with situations like these, but they’ve also reminded me that the responsibility of caring for others should always be greater than the desire to have all the answers.
Recently, I met with a client whose situation stayed on my heart long after she left. She came to me hoping I could help, and I wanted so badly to be able to. But as I learned more about everything she had been through, I realized she needed someone with education and experience beyond what I currently have.
That experience didn’t discourage me.
It humbled me.
Around that same time, I began working with my own holistic RN. Even as someone who loves learning about health and wellness, I realized that some of the supplements I had always considered appropriate to recommend were still generally safe, but they weren’t necessarily the best recommendation for every person, every medication, or every health condition. It reminded me that what works well for one person may not be the right answer for another.
Those two experiences changed my perspective.
They reminded me that I never want my passion to outrun my education.
Massage therapy has changed so many lives, and I believe deeply in the work I do. I’ll always be happy to educate about massage, self-care, and general wellness. But I’ve become much more intentional about recognizing when someone would be better served by another professional with training I don’t yet have. Referring someone isn’t admitting defeat—it’s making sure they receive the best care possible.
Ironically, the more I learn, the more I realize how much there is still to learn.
One thing many of my regular clients have probably noticed is that stretching has become a much bigger part of my massage sessions over the last couple of years. I’ve seen firsthand how much it can improve mobility, reduce pain, and help people move more freely. That has inspired me to continue growing in that area, which is why I’m excited to attend my first continuing education course in Thai shoulder massage this August. I can’t wait to bring what I learn back into the treatment room to better serve all of you.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
Thank you for trusting me. Thank you for referring your loved ones. Thank you for believing in my small business enough that it has grown almost entirely through your kindness and word of mouth.
I promise I’ll continue to earn that trust by staying curious, continuing my education, recognizing the limits of my training, and always putting your well-being ahead of my pride.
I hope I never stop learning, never stop growing, and never lose sight of the incredible responsibility that comes with the trust you’ve placed in me.
