Tracy here, regarding closing:
Quite simply, The Tapsmith wouldn't exist without BH. For years, and I hung our hats there, staying out too late and having a blast. Our date nights almost always started or ended there. Toni even featured BH on her NY TV show a decade or more ago, back when Peekskill was often called the "Lower East Side of Westchester."
I got to know and because my Thursday nights were spent in the beer garden with a motley crew of amazing people. Tim and I started fishing together and talking about craft beer. At the time, I was in the final stretch of a 15-year career in marketing that had just about broken my spirit. Craft beer sounded a LOT more fun. Toni and I began looking for a space to buy, or build, a cool tavernβa place where you could just hang out and talk, soothed by a great soundtrack and a bartender who actually gave a s**t that you were there.
We built The Tapsmith in a space that used to be a long-time locksmith and a neighboring barbershop. Both sat dark most of the time. I asked Tim if he would help us, and he connected me with Ross, . Together, they educated us on the must-know aspects of building out the space, handling the technical details, and getting the beer to the people of and beyond.
After four months of a down-to-the-studs buildout, we opened our doors to a thirsty mob on April 10, 2019.
Tim taught me everything I know about the craft beer world. More importantly, he taught me how to run a spot that was different than just "a bar." When people compliment our space and atmosphere, it's because of Tim, Ross, and Pat Fondiller (who tapped our very first keg back when he was with Alewife, which is also sadly gone).
The last eight years of our lives are directly owed to Birdsall House. The connections I made there long ago are what made it possible for me to provide the experiences you enjoy at The Tap today.
We raise a glass to Birdsall House. A pioneer in our business. A legend in my book. A friend for all time. You have until July 26. Go get a drink, and tell 'em we sent ya! π
