Dolly Parton could have been a billionaire.

Between ownership of more than 3,000 tracks in her songwriting catalog, her smart business investments, and her tour and music sales, she could easily have crossed the seven-figure mark. I was reading just today that Whitney Houston’s cover of “I Will Always Love You,” which Dolly wrote, made Dolly $10 million in royalties in the 1990s alone.

She could have been a billionaire, several times over.

But she wasn’t . . . because she wouldn’t stop giving her money away to charity.

From her Imagination Library, which sends out a book per month for children from birth until they start school (inspired by her father, who couldn’t read or write), to disaster relief, to medical research, to wildlife protection, Dolly’s legacy goes far beyond that of a musician and performer.

She saw a need—especially in our children—and she did whatever she could to meet it. This world will be forever brighter because of the light she shone on others.

She could have been a billionaire, but her generosity made that impossible.

So on a planet of Elons and Donalds and Jeffs and Marks and Larrys . . .
