Update on the Property and north end of town:
Hey folks, we had a lot of customers come through this week and express outrage and concern about the direction of the town and the planned location of homeless service centers in our location and surrounding areas at the north 101 gateway.
We have a saying in our bakery: Muffins and Politics don’t mix. We worked hard over the years to uphold that mantra and create a space where everyone could feel welcome. Of course that can’t be 100% but we did our best. The world is a crazy enough place, you don’t need your baker on the soap box at 6am.
But this morning, I’ll stand on mine.
As usual here in Crescent City, there is the adult game of telephone when it comes to information. So I’ll set the record straight from our end and you can take it how you will.
We are moving to Colorado. We have not found this town to be supportive of small business, family growth or economic stability. This is apparent in the countless empty commercial spaces. The ever-growing residential real estate listings as families seek better horizons.
Our current landlords served the 30 day notice to us and are not honoring the continuation of our neighbor’s lease as a requirement of the sale as stated by Mission Possible in order to establish their Navigation Center for the homeless. This happened at the end of November 2023.
We have found in our interactions with public officials that they will say what they need to say to appease whomever they are speaking to, regardless if it aligns with their actions.
The truth is, the County Board of Supervisors is having a public meeting this Tuesday December 12 @ 10am to discuss the budget for the complete overhaul of the north end of town. See Agenda’s items 29 and 31.
They will use this property for a Navigation Center. The old Redwood Welding Building will be a Food Bank. They are removing Search and Rescue (behind Big 5) in order to construct a Pallet Home MicroVillage.
These decisions have not been finalized. The Board of Supervisors for some reason found it a topic not worthy of public announcement. It begs the question: why?
Every small business in town will be affected by this decision as it will affect the likelihood of repeat tourist traffic for annual family vacationers. Multiple low income housing properties will be impacted, many of them families with children who will now be forced into a changed living situation they have not even been notified about.
If you have a problem with this decision about your town, the time to discuss it with your local elected representatives is at that Tuesday meeting. Be prepared to wait a while, it will likely be a long wait. If you have something to say we urge you to be civil, but to clearly address how this decision will positively or negatively impact your life.
If you are planning on going let us know and we will make sure we support your civic engagement with goodies we will bake for you and deliver while you wait, free of charge.
If you are not willing to voice your public opinion in the appropriate forum, you are allowing change to happen in your town that you may or may not agree with.
I believe these services are in need and have a place in town but not to the detriment of small local business. If we destroy the economy, what will we reintegrate the homeless population into?
