Larson’s career best leads way for Warrior golf team
Bria Larson posted the best score of her competitive life Wednesday, as the Del Norte High girls’ golf tightened its hold on first place in the Humboldt-Del Norte League season-long standings.
Larson, a senior, fired a 91 at Beau Pre Golf Course in McKinleyville, to win by three strokes. As a team, Del Norte earned a comfortable victory against four other HDN teams.
The victory also lifted Larson into first place in the season-long individual competition, eight strokes ahead of teammate Jaylee Keeling, who is in second place.
“Bria had her best day,” said Del Norte Coach Blaine Lopez. “That’s the best score I’ve seen in my four years as golf coach.” Keeling came through with a score of 104, while Kalyssa Moodie turned in a 119, and Gena Gallardo finished at 142. Moodie’s score was her best round of the year by 14 shots.
“She deserves a lot of credit,” Lopez said of Moodie’s effort. “That really helped us in the team standings.”
After five tournaments, Del Norte owns a score of 2,300, in front of second-place Eureka by 129 shots. Arcata is third at 2,454, with McKinleyville and Fortuna further back.
On Thursday, Oct. 16, the Warriors will play host to a tournament at Del Norte Golf Course, before finishing the regular season on Oct. 20 at Baywood Golf Club in Arcata.
Warriors post 3-0 boys soccer victory over Loggers
Del Norte High kept its bid for a Humboldt-Del Norte League boys’ soccer title in focus Wednesday, as the Warriors knocked off Eureka 3-0.
Playing in front of their home fans, the Warriors collected a pair of goals from Giovanni Lopez-Minor, plus another from Giovanni Alvarado to keep their Humboldt-Del Norte League championship dreams alive.
The Warriors are 5-1-1 in league play, 11-3-1 overall, in third place, but just barely behind first-place Arcata at 6-0-1 and second-place Fortuna at 6-1-0.
On Saturday at 1 p.m., Del Norte will play host to Fortuna in what could be a de facto elimination game for the title contenders.
Del Norte eye opportunity to avenge loss tonight
The Del Norte High volleyball team faces Arcata tonight in Charles Thunen Gymnasium in a critical battle for both teams.
The Tigers are in second place, a half-game in front of the 3-2 Warriors. Eureka is in first place at the halfway point of the season with a 4-0 Big Five Conference record.
When Del Norte and the Tigers met on Sept. 23 in Arcata, Del Norte fell in five close sets.
Junior varsity action tonight will begin at 5:30 p.m., with the varsity to follow.
After the varsity contest, a homecoming bonfire will be held in gravel parking lot west of Mike Whalen Field. Food and desserts will be available.
