First, I want to sincerely apologize for the silence these past months. It’s been a challenging time, and I wanted to share a detailed update on everything that has been happening over the last six months.
I’m currently working with the Entrepreneur Fund to explore funding options and determine what resources might be available. I’ve also applied for the flood recovery program, though the process is still ongoing. Unfortunately, the building suffered severe internal and foundational damage, and given its age and the extent of the repairs needed, I’m hesitant to rebuild in its current state. Even more concerning, repairing the building wouldn’t move it out of the floodplain, leaving me at risk of facing this nightmare again. The contractors I’ve consulted share this view.
As much as I love the current building, the best option appears to be tearing it down and building something new that is safely out of the floodplain. However, this option comes with a daunting price tag, and I have to consider whether I can afford it—even if I qualify for a loan. I am committed to being both hopeful and realistic, and while the road ahead is uncertain, I have not given up. I am doing everything I can to bring the café back stronger than ever. I miss it all—the staff, the cookies during this holiday season, and most of all, serving this incredible community that has supported us through thick and thin.
Here are answers to some common questions I’ve received:
Did insurance cover any of the damages?
Unfortunately, no. I didn’t have flood insurance, and because the damage was entirely due to flooding, my claim was denied. The flood policy available to me would have capped coverage at $110,000, which wouldn’t have been enough to cover the repairs.
Did you apply for FEMA?
Yes, I did. However, I was informed that my application is currently on hold because there are no funds available until congress approves additional relief.
On a brighter note, I want to wish all our friends, family, and supporters a happy and safe holiday season. We still have merchandise and mugs available, and they make fantastic Christmas gifts!

Lastly—and perhaps most excitingly—on the day of the flood, I found out I was pregnant! My husband and I are thrilled to be expecting our first child in early 2025. This year has been a rollercoaster of emotions, with incredible highs and heartbreaking lows. My staff and I have been through so much, and we deeply appreciate your continued thoughts, prayers, and encouragement as we navigate this time.
I promise to keep you updated if there’s any significant news about the café. Thank you all for your unwavering support—it means the world to us.
Best wishes,
Megan Strong
