Hello friends!

We don’t have any updates on the café right now—at the moment, we’re soaking up these special moments as new parents. ❤️

We did want to share that our Shopify store is back up and running! Since we haven’t been at the farmers market this summer, you can grab your favorites online:

- plenty of coffe mugs
- a few shirts and cozy sweatshirts left
- and, of course, our local wild rice!

If you’re nearby and prefer to pay cash, we’re happy to meet you in Cook—just send us a message.

We miss you all more than you know. It’s been a challenge to stay mentally strong through all of this, and we’re so grateful for the love and support you’ve shown. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. ❤️

First, I want to sincerely apologize for the silence these past months. It’s been a challenging time, and I wanted to share a detailed update on everything that has been happening over the last six months.

I’m currently working with the Entrepreneur Fund to explore funding options and determine what resources might be available. I’ve also applied for the flood recovery program, though the process is still ongoing. Unfortunately, the building suffered severe internal and foundational damage, and given its age and the extent of the repairs needed, I’m hesitant to rebuild in its current state. Even more concerning, repairing the building wouldn’t move it out of the floodplain, leaving me at risk of facing this nightmare again. The contractors I’ve consulted share this view.

As much as I love the current building, the best option appears to be tearing it down and building something new that is safely out of the floodplain. However, this option comes with a daunting price tag, and I have to consider whether I can afford it—even if I qualify for a loan. I am committed to being both hopeful and realistic, and while the road ahead is uncertain, I have not given up. I am doing everything I can to bring the café back stronger than ever. I miss it all—the staff, the cookies during this holiday season, and most of all, serving this incredible community that has supported us through thick and thin.

Here are answers to some common questions I’ve received:

Did insurance cover any of the damages?
Unfortunately, no. I didn’t have flood insurance, and because the damage was entirely due to flooding, my claim was denied. The flood policy available to me would have capped coverage at $110,000, which wouldn’t have been enough to cover the repairs.

Did you apply for FEMA?
Yes, I did. However, I was informed that my application is currently on hold because there are no funds available until congress approves additional relief.

On a brighter note, I want to wish all our friends, family, and supporters a happy and safe holiday season. We still have merchandise and mugs available, and they make fantastic Christmas gifts!

Lastly—and perhaps most excitingly—on the day of the flood, I found out I was pregnant! My husband and I are thrilled to be expecting our first child in early 2025. This year has been a rollercoaster of emotions, with incredible highs and heartbreaking lows. My staff and I have been through so much, and we deeply appreciate your continued thoughts, prayers, and encouragement as we navigate this time.

I promise to keep you updated if there’s any significant news about the café. Thank you all for your unwavering support—it means the world to us.

Best wishes,
Megan Strong

Update - We are currently working with an area architect on plans for an entire rebuild. As you can see in these pictures, there is still quite a bit of damage after we’ve done some demo. Areas are still wet or mold-covered. After we’ve created the plans, our next step will be to gather bids from contractors.

If you know of any contractors that might interested in submitting a bid, please send them our way! Best way to reach us via email is at [email protected]
We are working to secure funding to help pay for this large undertaking, so we greatly appreciate any donations that still come through. Please share our GoFundMe page if you are willing 😊 https://gofund.me/7d3f6d76

We sure do miss you all and wish we had better news sooner. Our hope is to get this ball rolling quickly so we can come back better than ever and serve you all again! ❤️

We hope you all had a safe and happy 4th of July!
We received the report from the engineer on Wednesday, which states that the building is not considered at risk of collapse. If you’ve seen the state of the building, a large scale remodel or rebuild is needed. This will be quite an undertaking, but we know it is wanted and is possible.
As of right now, we are waiting for contracting bids and the City of Cook to acquire any type of funding we might be able to receive.

We will have a table at the Cook Area Farmers Market again this Saturday from 8am to noon with merch, mugs, and wild rice! Stop by if you are able and check out the other great vendors on Main Street.

After over 100 years, a community landmark in Cook, MN is in danger of shutting its doors after flood waters ravaged the city.

Thank you SO much to those that have showed up the past two days to help, buy our merch, donate, or just offer kind words. It has been amazing to see how much this town cares about each other, the Cafe, and Megan and our family. We are so grateful. ❤️

We have been told a structural engineer will be stopping by on Monday to assess the building. While we are unsure of what kind of news it will bring, we are hopeful that this week will bring better vibes and answers compared to the past two weeks. We will continue to keep you updated the best we can.

Well, when it rains.. it pours.
While our pop-up shop was off to a great start, the city decided that our building was considered unstable and at risk for collapsing. Our section of Main Street is now closed and the area surrounding the Cafe has been taped off. Now we wait for a structural engineer inspection.

We will have a table at the Cook Area Farmers Market on Saturday from 8am-12pm. We completely sold out of Take & Bakes today, but we will still have mugs and other merchandise to buy. Please stop by, order online or message us to buy, or consider donating to our GoFundMe. We appreciate the support and those who helped us today ❤️

Update: We met with our insurance provider yesterday and found out that nothing will be covered. While it was another discouraging blow, we are working on a possible next step and will share more details on that soon hopefully.

In the meantime, we will have a pop-up shop at the Cafe this weekend! Help us out by buying some of our merch or Take & Bakes on Friday 6/28 from 12-5pm or Saturday 6/29 from 8-12pm.
