"If you’re going to spend your hard-earned barbecue dollars (and let’s be honest - barbecue isn’t exactly a “budget meal” anymore), you want to make sure you’re choosing wisely. McKenzie’s Barbecue in Conroe is one of those places that makes the decision feel like a win before you’ve even wiped the sauce off your fingers.
First off - come hungry. Or better yet, come starving. We arrived for a late lunch and the food was hot and fresh. We even had to wait for the fried okra to finish before we received our order. The portions here are so generous that we ended up gettjng to-go boxes… and not in a polite, “just taking a little home” way. More like, “there is absolutely no physical way we can finish all this” kind of situation. It’s the kind of problem you’re happy to have, especially when the leftovers make you feel like you’ve extended the experience another day.
The atmosphere also stood out to us. It feels like a genuinely local spot, not some polished, cookie-cutter chain trying to fake authenticity. You can tell it’s a place with heart. It even gave us the impression of being a Christian-owned establishment, which added an extra layer of warmth and hospitality that we really appreciated.
We went to celebrate my aunt’s birthday, and it turned out to be the perfect choice - relaxed, welcoming, and filled with enough good food to keep everyone happy (and quiet, which is saying something). Between the hearty portions, the friendly vibe, and the sense that you’re supporting a local business, it checks all the right boxes.
Bottom line: I’d absolutely go back - just maybe wear stretchy pants next time. Highly recommend McKenzie’s if you’re in the Conroe area and looking for barbecue that delivers on both quantity and comfort."
