There was a time when a broken kettle didn't automatically mean buying another one.

In isolated Appalachian communities, traveling tinkers and repairmen could provide a valuable service by mending household metalware and other everyday items that families depended on. Pots, pans, kettles, buckets, and tinware were worth repairing because replacing something could mean money a family didn't have—or a long trip to a town that did.

A skilled repairman carried his tools from community to community, earning money through work that helped families squeeze years more use from ordinary household goods.

It was part of an older Appalachian way of thinking: use what you have, repair what you can, and don't throw away something simply because it has seen hard use.

Today we might call that sustainability.

For mountain families, it was simply practical living.
