🤰🏽💚 MATERNAL HEALTH STARTS WITH ACCESS TO NUTRITIOUS FOOD

Pregnancy and the months after birth are times when good nutrition matters tremendously—for both mom and baby. But for families experiencing nutrition insecurity, consistently accessing nourishing foods can be difficult.

When budgets are stretched, transportation is limited, or healthy foods aren’t readily available nearby, expectant and new mothers may face difficult choices about how to feed themselves and their families.

At The Food Mill, we believe access to nutritious food should be part of the conversation about maternal health.

🥕 Fresh fruits and vegetables
🥚 Nutritious proteins and pantry staples
🛒 Affordable access to healthy foods
🍎 Nutrition education and practical cooking skills
💚 Community-based support that meets families where they are

Through initiatives such as our Mobile Farmers Market, Heart Healthy Pantry, Cooking Matters, and Food is Medicine programming, we work to reduce barriers to nutritious food and help families build healthier futures.

Because supporting maternal health isn’t only about what happens in a doctor’s office.

It’s also about what happens at the grocery store, in the kitchen, around the dinner table—and throughout the community.

When we nourish mothers, we help nourish the next generation. 🌱

🩷 OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH 🩷

At The Food Mill, we believe food is health—and during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re highlighting an important connection between nutrition security and cancer prevention, treatment, and recovery.

Nutrition insecurity does not mean that someone will develop breast cancer. Breast cancer has many risk factors, and no single food or diet can prevent it. But reliable access to nutritious food can support overall health and help people maintain healthy eating patterns associated with a lower risk of several chronic diseases and some cancers.

For someone facing breast cancer, food insecurity can create an additional burden. The costs of treatment, missed work, transportation, medications, and other expenses can make it harder to afford nutritious food. At the same time, treatment may affect appetite, taste, energy levels, and the body’s nutritional needs.

🥕 Nutrition security matters throughout the cancer journey. Consistent access to nourishing foods can help support strength and overall well-being during treatment and recovery, while reducing the stress of having to choose between groceries and other essential expenses.

Through our work at The Food Mill, we are committed to helping make nutritious food accessible, affordable, and practical for the people we serve.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we honor the survivors, remember those we have lost, support those currently undergoing treatment, and stand beside the families and caregivers walking this journey. 🩷

Because access to nutritious food shouldn’t be another battle someone has to fight.

🌱 LET’S TALK, COLUMBUS! 🌱

At The Food Mill, we believe access to nutritious food can do more than fill a plate—it can strengthen families, support better health, and build a stronger community. 💚

But today, we want to hear from YOU!

🥕 Finish this sentence:

“A healthier community starts with __________.”

Is it…
🥦 Access to fresh, nutritious food?
🍎 Nutrition education?
💰 Affordable groceries?
🚚 Bringing healthy food directly into neighborhoods?
🤝 Neighbors helping neighbors?
💚 Something else entirely?

👇 Drop your answer in the comments!

There’s no wrong answer. We want to know what YOU believe makes the biggest difference in creating a healthier, more food-secure Columbus.

Then, take it one step further: Tag someone who is helping make our community healthier! 🌱

At The Food Mill, we’re working every day to connect food, health, education, and community—because lasting change happens when we cultivate it together.

💜 OCTOBER IS NATIONAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH 💜

At The Food Mill, we know that food insecurity is about more than an empty refrigerator or a skipped meal. Financial hardship and limited access to basic necessities can also make it more difficult for someone experiencing domestic violence to leave an unsafe situation or establish independence.

For survivors, food can become part of the struggle for safety. An abusive partner may control money, restrict access to groceries, prevent someone from working, or use food and other necessities as a means of control. And when a survivor considers leaving, questions like “How will I feed my children?” or “How will I afford groceries on my own?” can become very real barriers.

💜 Food security can support safety and independence.

When families have reliable access to nutritious, affordable food and community resources, we help reduce one of the financial pressures that can leave people feeling trapped or vulnerable.

Throughout Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we encourage our community to remember that hunger, poverty, health, and safety are often interconnected. Addressing food insecurity is one piece of building a community where individuals and families have greater stability, dignity, and opportunity.

🥕 Increase access.
💚 Reduce financial barriers.
🤝 Connect people with resources.
💜 Support survivors without judgment.

At The Food Mill, our mission is centered on food—but the impact of food reaches far beyond the plate.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, help is available. In an immediate emergency, call 911 (tel:911). The National Domestic Violence Hotline provides confidential support 24/7 at 800-799-SAFE (tel:800-799-SAFE) (7233) or by texting START to 88788.

🍎🥔🥒 IT’S FARM STAND FRIDAY… AND CROCKTOBER! 🍲🍅🌶️

It’s Friday, and y’all know what that means for The Food Mill… FARM STAND FRIDAY! 🙌🌱

And this Friday is extra special because it’s officially CROCKTOBER! 🍲

All month long, we’re showing you that incorporating fresh, seasonal produce into your meals doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming.

🌱 FARM FRESH PRODUCE AVAILABLE AT TODAY’S FARM STAND:

💛 Squash
🥒 Zucchini
🌶️ Jalapeños
🫑 Sweet Peppers
🥒 Cucumbers
🍆 Eggplant
🍅 Red Tomatoes
🍅 Green Tomatoes
🍎 Pink Lady Apples
🧅 Onions
🥔 Red Potatoes
🥔 White Potatoes

And guess what? We created a Crock-Pot recipe that puts many of these Farm Stand favorites to work!

🍲 FARM STAND CROCK-POT HARVEST VEGETABLE STEW

This hearty recipe uses many of the fresh fruits and vegetables available at today’s Farm Stand! The Pink Lady apple adds a touch of natural sweetness, while the jalapeño lets you decide how much heat to bring. 🌶️

🛒 FROM THE FARM STAND:
• 1 medium zucchini, chopped
• 1 medium yellow squash, chopped
• 1 small eggplant, chopped
• 2 red tomatoes, chopped
• 1 green tomato, chopped
• 1 sweet pepper, chopped
• ½–1 jalapeño, finely diced
• 1 medium onion, chopped
• 2 red potatoes, cubed
• 2 white potatoes, cubed
• 1 Pink Lady apple, peeled, cored & diced

🏠 FROM YOUR PANTRY:
• 3 cups low-sodium vegetable or chicken broth
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• 1 tsp Italian seasoning
• 1 tsp smoked paprika
• ½ tsp black pepper
• ½ tsp salt, or to taste
• 1 tbsp olive oil

👩‍🍳 CROCK-POT DIRECTIONS:

Add the potatoes and onion first, followed by the eggplant, tomatoes, peppers, jalapeño and apple. Pour in the broth and add the garlic, seasonings and olive oil.

⏰ Cook on LOW for 6–7 hours or HIGH for 3–4 hours, until the potatoes are tender.

Add the zucchini and squash during the final 45–60 minutes so they stay tender without becoming too soft.

🥒 BUT WHAT ABOUT THOSE FARM FRESH CUCUMBERS?

We didn’t forget them!

Dice cucumber, red tomato and sweet pepper and toss with a splash of vinegar or lemon juice. Spoon it over your warm stew for a fresh, crunchy finish. 😋

💚 FARM STAND TIP:
Don’t have every ingredient? That’s okay! Use what you have and make it your own. Seasonal cooking can be simple, flexible and a great way to reduce food waste.

Fresh, local produce doesn’t have to mean more time in the kitchen.

🍲 Stay tuned throughout CROCKTOBER! We’ll be sharing more Crock-Pot-friendly recipes featuring fresh, seasonal produce available through The Food Mill.

🧡 HUNGER ACTION MONTH | ONE LAST QUESTION…
🌱 WHAT COMES NEXT?

For the past month, we’ve talked about hunger differently.

Not simply:

📦 How many bags can we distribute?

But:

🌱 How do we disrupt the cycle that makes those bags necessary?

We’ve talked about:

🚐 Access
💵 Affordability
🥕 Nutritious food
👩‍🍳 Nutrition education
🛒 Choice
❤️ Health
🤝 Community partnerships
🗣️ Listening
🌱 Stability
💡 Opportunity
❤️ Dignity

Thirty days.

Thirty conversations.

But the work doesn’t stop because Hunger Action Month ends.

So for our final interactive challenge, we don’t want you to choose from A, B, C or D.

WE WANT YOUR WORD.

If you could choose ONE WORD to describe what you want the future of food security in our community to look like, what would it be?

Maybe it’s…

ACCESS.

DIGNITY.

CHOICE.

HEALTH.

STABILITY.

EQUITY.

OPPORTUNITY.

COMMUNITY.

EMPOWERMENT.

HOPE.

Or maybe your word isn’t on our list at all.

👇 DROP YOUR ONE WORD IN THE COMMENTS.

Then here’s the challenge:

Tell us WHY.

Because the future we’re working toward isn’t simply a community with less hunger.

It’s a community with more.

🥕 More access to nutritious food.

🛒 More choice.

👩‍🍳 More knowledge and confidence.

❤️ More opportunities to support health.

💵 More stability.

🤝 More connection.

🌱 More pathways forward.

Throughout Hunger Action Month, we’ve talked about moving from transactional to transformational.

And maybe that entire idea can be summarized in one question:

“What becomes possible next?”

A grocery bag can help today.

But access, education, affordability, health support, partnerships and opportunity can help create a different tomorrow.

🧡 SEPTEMBER MAY END. THE WORK DOESN’T.

The Mobile Market will keep moving.

Nutrition education will continue.

Our Heart Healthy Pantry will continue serving.

Our Food is Health and Produce Prescription work will continue connecting food and health.

Our community partnerships will continue growing.

And The Food Mill will keep asking:

How do we move beyond feeding hunger to helping disrupt the cycle behind it?

Now we want the final word of this series to come from YOU.

💬 ONE WORD.

What do you want the future of food security in our community to look like?

👇 Put it in the comments.

Then come back and read what your neighbors wrote.

Because transformation isn’t something one organization creates alone.

🌱 It’s something a community grows together.

🧡 Hunger Action Month may be ending. Our hunger ACTION is not.
