For over 10 years, I’ve been going to US Foods/The Chef Store in Columbia, South Carolina. I haven’t gone as regularly since we opened Bessie's Burgers and More, but I’m usually there about once a month.
The entire staff knows me, especially the old-timers. They don’t call me VonGretchen, they call me Miss Bessie. ❤️
I’ve never corrected them because, to me, it is an honor and a privilege to be called my grandmother’s name. In fact, it warms my heart every single time someone says her name.
I went in this morning to pick up a few packages that were very hard to find and associate. I found that to be fairly odd, but I went to the front and saw one of my usual sweet ladies checking people out.
When I got to the register, she looked at me with tears in her eyes and said, “Miss. Bessie, Danny passed last night.”
My heart stopped.
I said, “You’re not talking about my Danny?” Yes. She was. No… not Danny. 💔
Danny was always the person who would help you find a needle in a haystack. If you couldn’t find what you were looking for on the shelf, Danny was checking the stockroom. He was looking behind boxes. He was moving things around. He went the extra mile for his customers.
And when you walked through those front doors, he didn’t just say hello, he called you by your name.
Danny’s customer service was superior. Even if he was having a bad day, he still treated you with kindness. And if he noticed that YOU looked like you were having a bad day, he would check on you too. The last thing he said to me is, “Miss. Bessie, you look tired, you better slow down!”
What store can you walk into in 2026 and receive that type of genuine customer service?
Danny wasn’t just doing a job. He was making people feel seen. He made people feel remembered. He made people feel like they mattered.
I did not know Danny outside of The Chef Store, but Danny made a HUGE impact in his role and in the community. And sometimes, you don’t have to know someone outside of their workplace to know the kind of person they were.
My heart is broken this morning. 💔
To Danny’s family, his colleagues, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him please know that his kindness, his service, and the way he cared for people did not go unnoticed.
The Bible tells us:
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:18
🙏🏾 Lord, please wrap Your loving arms around Danny’s family, his friends, and his Chef’Store family. Give them strength for the days ahead, comfort when the reality of his absence sets in, and peace that only You can provide. Thank You for allowing Danny’s life to touch so many people. May the love and kindness he gave to others continue to live through everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. In Jesus’ name, Amen. 🙏🏾
Danny, you will be sorely missed.
Rest well. Your work here was meaningful, and your impact was felt. 🕊️💙
