One of the most fascinating facts about chicken tikka masala… is that it’s often called Britain’s “true national dish”… even though its roots are clearly Indian.
The most popular story takes us back to the 1970s… inside a small restaurant in Glasgow… Shish Mahal. A customer was served dry chicken tikka… and he complained… saying it needed gravy.
Instead of arguing… the chef, Ali Ahmed Aslam, did something brilliant. He improvised… mixing tomato soup, cream, and spices… and poured it over the chicken.
That one quick decision… changed food history.
The customer loved it… the dish spread across the UK… and soon, chicken tikka masala became a national favorite.
In 2001… Robin Cook even called it a true British national dish… saying it represents how Britain adapts and absorbs cultures from around the world.
So next time you eat chicken tikka masala… remember… it’s not just a dish… it’s a story of culture, migration… and one simple complaint… that created something unforgettable.
