Food Safety Tip to Avoid Cyclosporiasis

According to the CDC, Cyclospora outbreaks are most frequently linked to fresh, imported soft fruits and vegetables.

Specific produce to avoid:
Bagged salad mixes and kits (pre-cut lettuce blends with romaine, iceberg, red cabbage, carrots)
Fresh cilantro (coriander leaves)
Fresh basil
Raspberries
Snow peas
Green onions (scallions)

Washing your produce doesn't completely eliminate the risk, so the CDC advises buying frozen fruit and cooking your vegetables to an internal temperature of 158°F. Buying from your local farmers can lower the risk, since the cyclosporiasis outbreak is linked to major industrial growers or centralized packing houses that distribute to many regions.
