Aquaponics is a sustainable food production system that combines traditional aquaculture (the raising of aquatic animals, such as Tilapia) with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water) in a symbiotic environment. The fish waste ultimately feeds the plants by using bacteria to break down any organic material and then convert that material to nitrates for uptake by the plants, which in turn filter,

cleanse and re-oxygenate the water for the fish. As the system requires no fertilizer or chemicals (the addition of which would kill the fish, and without the fish the plants die) the plants are easily certifiable as organic and the fish are raised in a healthy, stress-free environment.
