❤️ 10 YEARS OF 5 BOROUGH BAGELS ❤️

🥯 #3 – The Year That Changed Everything

For us, that year was filled with uncertainty, fear, resilience, loss, recognition, and some completely unexpected moments.

Like every small business, we were forced to adapt almost overnight. Health guidelines changed constantly, every day brought a new challenge, and we worried about our employees, our customers, and whether we could keep moving forward.

But even in the middle of all that uncertainty, our community continued to show up.

That year, presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg stopped by our Clive shop during his campaign in Iowa — one of those surreal moments that made us pause and think, “How did we get here?”

Sarah was also honored by the Iowa Restaurant Association as one of Iowa’s 40 Women to Watch in Hospitality, and 5 Borough Bagels was named Business of the Year by the Clive Chamber of Commerce.

But when we think about 2020, awards and big moments aren’t the only things we remember.

We think about people like our friend Robert.

During some of the darkest and most uncertain mornings, Robert would stop by with his smile and positivity. When the world felt heavy, he had a way of making it feel lighter. Those conversations meant more than he probably ever knew.

Robert has since passed away, but his kindness, optimism, and friendship will always be part of our story.

Looking back, 2020 challenged us, humbled us, surprised us, and strengthened us.

It reminded us that community has a way of carrying you through even the hardest seasons.

And for that, we will always be grateful. ❤️

❤️ 10 YEARS OF 5 BOROUGH BAGELS ❤️

As we continue celebrating 10 years in Clive, we’re sharing the moments that shaped our journey.

Today is one that will always hold a special place in our hearts.

🥯 #2 – The Community That Carried Us

In 2018, Toney and I found ourselves facing one of the most difficult seasons of our lives.

Our daughter was born three months early while we were also trying to navigate life as new restaurant owners. We were scared, overwhelmed, and spending every possible moment at the NICU.

What we remember most, though, isn’t the fear.

It’s the kindness.

Customers, friends, and complete strangers began showing up with care packages, meals, snacks, encouraging notes, and one gift we’ll never forget: handmade preemie-sized hats and clothing for our baby girl.

If you’ve ever shopped for a premature baby, you know how difficult it can be to find clothing small enough to fit. These tiny hats and outfits weren’t just thoughtful gifts—they were exactly what our family needed during a time when every little thing felt uncertain.

The love and support our community showed us helped carry our family through some very long days and sleepless nights.

To this day, it has remained our mission to give back whenever we can to the incredible doctors and nurses at the NICU who cared for our daughter. Sometimes we’re out serving bagels and one of those nurses will stop by and say, “I remember your story. I remember your little girl.”

And every single time, our hearts fill with gratitude.

Ten years of 5 Borough Bagels has taught us that we’re more than a business. We’re part of a community that shows up for one another when it matters most.

🎉 10 YEARS OF 5 BOROUGH BAGELS 🎉

On June 13, our original Clive location celebrates 10 years of serving the community that made our dream possible.

Over the next 10 days, we’re counting down the Top 10 Moments in 5 Borough Bagels history—moments that shaped who we are, challenged us, inspired us, and reminded us why we do what we do.

From opening our first shop to expanding across Central Iowa, every chapter has one thing in common: YOU.

Today, we begin with the moment that started it all.

🥯 #1 – Opening Day

June 13, 2016.

Our very first day.

To be honest, we had absolutely no idea what we were doing.

We knew how to work hard, but we still had so much to learn. Every day brought new challenges, mistakes, lessons, and opportunities to improve.

Thankfully, our customers were patient with us as we found our footing.

Over the years, you’ve taught us how to be better bakers, better business owners, and better members of this community.

Ten years later, we’re still learning, still growing, and still grateful.

Thank you for making the last decade possible.

Here’s to the next 10 years. ❤️
