Clifton Mill sits on the Little Miami River in Clifton, Ohio, and it is one of the largest water-powered grist mills still standing in the country.
The current building dates to 1802, making it older than the state of Ohio by a year. It is a tall wooden structure built into the gorge wall, with the wheel and the millworks driven by water dropping through the narrow rock cut below. Mills operated on this site continuously through the 1800s, grinding grain for farms across Greene and Clark counties.
The gorge is the setting and it is dramatic. The Little Miami cuts through limestone and dolomite here, creating a narrow rocky channel with steep walls, and Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve runs alongside with trails and overlooks. The mill hangs right over the water.
The restaurant inside is the daily draw. Breakfast is the meal. Pancakes made from flour ground on site, along with eggs, sausage and country ham, served in a dining room with windows looking down into the gorge. There is a mill store selling flour, cornmeal and pancake mix.
But the reason most Ohioans know the name is Christmas.
The Legendary Lights of Clifton Mill run every year from Thanksgiving through early January, and the display is enormous. More than four million lights covering the mill, the gorge, the bridge, the trees and the riverbanks. The lights come on all at once at a set hour, and there is a countdown and a crowd.
There is also a collection of over 3,000 Santa Claus figures in an exhibit space, a miniature village, and a synchronized light show on the covered bridge.
It draws people from across Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky, and the parking situation reflects that. Go on a weeknight if you can.
The mill is family owned and has been for decades.
Two hundred and some years on the same water.
