I honestly can’t remember how many years I’ve volunteered for this event, but I can tell you one thing: it’s one I never want to miss. ❤️
For a few days each September, it feels like we step back in time. The stories, the families, the friendships, and the traditions seem to get better and more meaningful every year.
Diane and I have worked the front porch of the James Woods Cabin together for a decade now. She makes soap and shares its history with hundreds of children, taking them all the way back to Biblical times when we lived under the law of sacrifice.
And she tells every single child the story as though it’s the very first time she’s ever told it. Their faces light up as they touch the soap, scrub the cloth on the washboard, and eagerly ask, “Can I wash some more?”
We are blessed to be part of this little village.
When the battle begins, we spend our time with The Belle Sisters, watching and listening for that moment when the cannon fires and smoke rings rise into the sky.
We visit Wilhelmina and admire her beautiful dresses. And, of course, you can’t forget Doc and his delicious root beer, lemonade, birch beer, and cream soda. And on Saturday, Miss Susan treats us to beans and cobbler from the Boy Scouts. ❤️
I’m not going to lie… it’s hot. And I probably sweat more than I care to admit! 😂 But I wouldn’t change a moment of it.
Because somewhere along the way, these people became family.
I wouldn’t miss a second with this family we’ve built over the years. I wouldn’t trade the stories, the laughter, the heat, the battles, or the long days.
And then there’s the history.
The rich, amazing stories woven together like threads in a beautiful tapestry. Stories of people who lived, loved, struggled, sacrificed, and built lives long before us.
This event is more than a reenactment. It’s a labor of love by people who believe that history should be remembered, experienced, and passed on.
Thank you to everyone who came out and visited us this year! Your presence means more than you know.
If you’ve never experienced it, mark your calendar. ❤️
The reenactment is held the third weekend of September in Maysville, with a different battle each day. Every reenactor is a volunteer, giving their time because they believe in preserving a piece of history that should never be lost.
Until next year… I’ll be counting the days. ❤️
