So how important is cold beer to you? While we have a few large walk-in coolers to store our kegs, our brewery chiller is the 'heart' of the operation. It supports fermentation, carbonation, filtration, and canning. All those black tubes on the wall are glycol lines that cool each of our tanks.
Another long post for the brewery geeks about a piece of gear!
Since March 27th, we've been at half-power when our original chiller decide to start playing games with us. Even worse, no one could fix it. Even worse(er), we could only do one thing at a time as we waiting for our old chiller to catch up which meant, we fell behind. We were able to 'force' the chiller to keep running by effectively turning on what one tech called "kamikaze mode" - no safeties, no real controls - it was to run until it couldn't - even as it was tearing itself apart. A calculated risk while our new chiller was built/shipped and a stressful 10 weeks for our brewhouse! Each day, our owner walked by the chiller humming the Wilson Phillips song, "Hold On" - for one more day. It's his coping mechanism! Don't be judgey!
Good news is - it made it until last Thursday when our new G&D Chiller could be installed. It's give us 60% more cooling capacity with two independent systems for redundancy.
So, yeah - the chiller is the unsung hero of any brewery. Say hello to "Bumble" ... our Abominable (Adorable) Glycol Monster. Suitable graphics for the frame coming soon.
Cheers.
