Throwback Thursday: Back when Clemson was an all-military school, upperclassmen tricked hundreds of freshmen cadets by claiming the freezers broke in the creamery and ice cream was free. They all sprinted out of the mess hall with their milk pitchers and waited in line for hours only to be disappointed to find out the creamery’s freezers were still working. They may have been pranked, but they did get a spot in Clemson History. This photo from 1939 showcases this prank in action!

Long before Clemson Ice Cream was made in Newman Hall, it was originally made in the Dairy Building pictured here! This building was right behind Sikes Hall, and was the original place Clemson Ice Cream was produced all the way back in the early 1900s. In the 1950s operations were moved to Newman Hall, but the student-made tradition we scoop today at ‘55 Exchange started right here 🍦🧡💜

Last week we welcomed in Clemson Staff Senate to come do an innovation experience 🍦💜🧡 They brainstormed their flavors as groups got to play an interactive game, and tried the winning flavor!

Take a look at what they made:

Base: Rich Dutch Chocolate
Add-ins: Peanut Butter & Mini Reese’s Cups
Variegates: Salted Caramel & Marshmallow Swirls

We are so thankful for the legacy of the last all-military class at Clemson, and believe it is incredibly important to highlight our past such as this 1955 photo of Newman Hall and the Poole Agricultural Center, where many Clemson alumni first tasted Clemson Ice Cream!
