Refuge Coffee Co.

resettles 2,500 refugees in Clarkston, GA, a little city on the edge of Atlanta that TIME magazine called "the most diverse square mile in the country." From over 145 countries, survivors of war and famine arrive right here in Atlanta's backyard. And it is a struggle from day one to create a home here. Refuge Coffee's goal is to provide a safe place to anchor Clarkston's refugee community. Because

jobs are such a huge need, we're starting with a Refuge Coffee Truck to create our first refugee job and begin our job training program. Ultimately, our dream is to build a Coffee Shop in the heart of Clarkston that reflects the true heart of our city, a veritable mash-up of Asian/African/Arabic/American cultures. We will not only train resettled refugees here; we’ll create a place for these unique cultures to tell their stories and share their lives. For a brief glimpse into the city of Clarkston, feel free to check out this short PBS Documentary from 2012. http://www.pbs.org/wnet/need-to-know/video/need-to-know-september-21-2012-america-by-the-numbers/14907/

"Is this the dream?" "Yes, but it's so much better."
This week's Driven for Dreams email comes from Kitti, our founder.
She shares how Chief would find her at the edge of the crowd at almost every Refuge event in the early years, put his arm around her shoulders, and ask that question.
He was rooted in reality but also the biggest cheerleader of dreams. Generosity was just his go-to. He couldn't help it.
Thanks to you, we're at $47,511 of our $50,000 goal. Just $2,489 to go.

Meet Susan, our Chief Operating Officer.
Refuge Coffee started with a truck. It’s how we got out into the community, told the real story about refugees, and created moments of connection across Metro Atlanta.
Getting a new truck back on the road means more of that. More events. More neighborhoods. More welcome.

"What is enough? It's enough to make people feel seen and welcomed. It's enough to protect the dignity of the invisible."
This week's Driven for Dreams email comes from Matt Murray, one of Chief's four sons.
Matt shares how his dad was a listener who was always "for you." A deep thinker who asked questions instead of offering solutions.
If Chief had designed the truck? Two seats and a table attached so you could talk to the barista while you wait. He probably wouldn't even want it named after him. He'd rather it be called "Everybody Matters."
That spirit lives on at Refuge.

What would our shop sound like if our baristas took over the music?
We asked. They answered. Volume up.

We’re so close. Help us get there.

11 years ago, we started Refuge Coffee Co.
This week's Driven for Dreams email comes from David Murray, one of Chief's four sons. And it lands on our birthday.
David shares how his dad taught them early on that everybody matters. That the move to Clarkston was intentional. No plans, just a desire to live somewhere defined by love for others. Chief was always drawn to the displaced.
That spirit is why Refuge exists. And 11 years later, it's still the heartbeat of everything we do.
This truck carries it forward.

Great coffee. Great people. A great reason to gather.

“After the first conversation, I found that he’s a man who have a heart. He love people. Someone who is ready to understand you. Ready to help you no matter what.”
Meet Leon. He’s been with Refuge Coffee since the very beginning.
He first met Bill at his home during evening prayer. Bill offered him a cup of tea. That was the start.
Bill always told him: “Leon, if you see something, please don’t keep it. Come and voice out what you saw.”
When Leon came to America, he came looking for hope. Peace. A country to call home again.
That spirit is what Refuge was built on and it’s what this truck carries forward.

"Well, we have the means to provide, so why wouldn't we?"
This week's Driven for Dreams email comes from Andrew Murray, one of Chief's four sons.
Andrew shares how his dad had a gift for listening. Not just being good at it, but genuinely enjoying it. He could meet someone for ten minutes and make them feel known.
Growing up, the Murray home was always open. People staying, people living there. Andrew thought it was normal. It wasn't until later he realized most people don't open their homes that way.
Chief knew how to draw out someone's joy. And he knew how to sit with someone's pain without dragging it out of them.
That spirit lives on at Refuge. And this truck carries it forward.

Meet Steph, our Engagement and Partnership Coordinator. (In her words: she plans parties and talks to people.)
She's here to share why our Driven for Dreams campaign matters more than ever right now.
"The U.S. Refugee Admissions Program has been effectively dismantled. That means people fleeing war and persecution can no longer come here for safety."
These are real people. Your neighbors. Students. Families. Our baristas.
So what can you do?
Give to Driven for Dreams so we can continue to unlock opportunities for our Refuge employees and this community.
This is welcome. This is Refuge.

We’re at 11%.

That’s real.
That’s early.

Every dollar you give right now
gets matched.

$25 becomes $50
$100 becomes $200

This is how we do the work of welcome.

55 baristas trained.
18 countries represented.
More neighbors to come.

We only unlock the full match
if we reach it.

Will you help move this forward?

"He didn't draw attention to himself. Instead, he looked for the person on the outside—the one unsure, unseen, or alone—and he moved toward them."
This week's Driven for Dreams email comes from Stephen Murray, one of Chief's four sons.
He shares how his dad had a quiet way of making people feel seen. A simple question. A genuine smile. A reminder that they mattered.
Refuge Coffee wasn't a new idea for Chief. It was just an extension of who he already was.
That heart continues here. And this truck carries it forward.
Join us in funding a truck that fuels welcome. Every dollar is matched through the end of May.

Driven for Dreams!
We're raising funds for a brand new Refuge Coffee Truck.
This truck will create more jobs for our immigrant community, expand welcome, and help make dreams possible for many families. It will also honor our founder's husband, Bill "Chief" Murray, whose legacy of turning strangers into friends lives on here at Refuge.
And because our two OG trucks are no longer roadworthy, we'll finally get back out there on the road.
Here's the best part: every donation will be matched dollar for dollar, up to $50,000.
We're raising $50,000 by the end of May to meet our $100,000 goal.
Connection creates opportunity. Opportunity creates stability. Chief knew that. This truck proves it.
