Refuge Coffee Co.

resettles 2,500 refugees in Clarkston, GA, a little city on the edge of Atlanta that TIME magazine called "the most diverse square mile in the country." From over 145 countries, survivors of war and famine arrive right here in Atlanta's backyard. And it is a struggle from day one to create a home here. Refuge Coffee's goal is to provide a safe place to anchor Clarkston's refugee community. Because

jobs are such a huge need, we're starting with a Refuge Coffee Truck to create our first refugee job and begin our job training program. Ultimately, our dream is to build a Coffee Shop in the heart of Clarkston that reflects the true heart of our city, a veritable mash-up of Asian/African/Arabic/American cultures. We will not only train resettled refugees here; we’ll create a place for these unique cultures to tell their stories and share their lives. For a brief glimpse into the city of Clarkston, feel free to check out this short PBS Documentary from 2012. http://www.pbs.org/wnet/need-to-know/video/need-to-know-september-21-2012-america-by-the-numbers/14907/

Behind every cup is a bigger story.
Refuge Coffee exists to create jobs, training, and welcome for resettled refugees and immigrants. And the steadiest way that work keeps going is our Cortado Club, our community of monthly givers.
Monthly gifts are what let us plan ahead, keep our baristas employed, and say a consistent welcome to our newest neighbors. Any amount makes a difference, and it’s named after the best drink on our menu.

As we celebrate 250 years, we reflect on the words of refugees who are now citizens:
“I wanted to become a U.S. citizen because I don’t just want to live in the U.S.; I want to belong… I want to feel like I belong here and also have the ability to shape the future of this country by casting my vote.”
~ Methusella Rwabose, originally from DRC

“In a new country, far from home, the kindness of strangers became my lifeline… the solidarity I felt with other refugees helped me heal and rebuild my life.”
~Desange Kuenihira, originally from a refugee camp in Uganda

“I traveled 7,000 miles for a chance for a new home, for a future… I am one of the few refugees given another chance.”
~Abdallah Al-Obaidi, originally from Iraq

These are the stories, along with the many our Refuge Coffee employees have lived, that make us proud to be from a historically welcoming nation. Happy 4th!
