GOT A FOOD TRUCK?

In accordance with Alabama’s new mobile food unit law (SB197), food trucks in Jefferson County no longer need separate approval from the Jefferson County Department of Health if they have a permit from the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH). Food trucks must continue to follow all applicable rules, including returning daily to the commissary for cleaning and servicing.

🟦 WHAT IS SB197?

A proposed Alabama law creating a uniform statewide inspection system for food trucks and mobile food vendors.

✔ Reduces duplicate inspections
✔ Standardizes fire safety rules
✔ Keeps health oversight in place

🟨 BIG CHANGE (STARTING 2027)

Food trucks with valid certifications will:

🚫 NOT need separate inspections in every city or county
✔ Operate statewide with one approval system

BUT:

⚠ Local officials can still inspect anytime
⚠ Unsafe operations can be shut down immediately

🟩 TWO REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

To operate statewide, vendors must have:

🍔 Health Certificate

Issued by county health department

Based on commissary location

🔥 Fire Safety Certificate

Valid for 6 months

Issued by certified fire officials statewide

🟥 FIRE SAFETY RULES (STRICT STANDARDS)

All mobile food units must comply with:

✔ NFPA 96 – Hood systems & suppression
✔ NFPA 58 – LP gas safety
✔ NFPA 70 – Electrical systems
✔ Regular cleaning & maintenance schedules
✔ Annual gas pressure testing

🟪 ENFORCEMENT

Failure to comply results in:

⚠ Class C misdemeanor
⚠ Repeat violations = 30-day shutdown

Officials may also: 🚨 Immediately stop operations if public safety is at risk

Even with statewide certification:

🏛 Require business licenses
🏛 Enforce local ordinances
🏛 Conduct emergency inspections
