As I reflect on this Independence Day, I think about my country through the eyes of a Puerto Rican Christian man.
I’ve also had a difficult time finding where I fit politically. Maybe that’s because life has taught me that many important values don’t belong to just one side.
I was raised by a single teenage mother, so I understand the importance of helping those who are struggling. I graduated from college and built a small business, so I also understand the value of hard work, personal responsibility, and creating opportunities.
I don’t believe in telling people how to live their lives. I believe in God and Jesus, and I believe I should be able to express my faith without being told that it’s wrong. At the same time, I believe every person deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and kindness.
I love the United States of America. There are times when I don’t recognize the direction we’re heading, but I truly love this country. I’m grateful for the opportunities it gave me to build a better life.
I want to help change the world, so my family and I created a small one at GOODWORKS Coffee House. Coffee is essential (lol), but more importantly, it brings people together. Every day I have conversations with people of different beliefs, races, backgrounds, and social classes. That, to me, is one of America’s greatest strengths.
Our own family reflects that spirit. We are Puerto Rican, Indian, Polish, Irish, and French Canadian a true melting pot of cultures, traditions, and new ideas, while still honoring where we came from.
To everyone who has supported our family and GOODWORKS over the years, thank you. We appreciate you more than you know.
Happy Fourth of July! 🇺🇸
And remember, no matter what we believe or where we come from, there is always room for kindness.
